Phone Smart A Wi-Fi Alternative When the Network Gets Clogged

Talk about falling short of expectations.

In the last year, millions of people have snapped up new smartphones, filled them with apps and promptly found out that they couldn’t actually use them.

The problem? Either the much-hyped 3G pipeline was clogged with other users, or the cell connection wasn’t even good enough to ring the 3G bell in the first place. AT&T users have had it the worst, thanks to the network’s iPhone data hogs.

Carriers are quickly adding high-speed network capacity, but in the meantime, AT&T and T-Mobile are throwing another lifeline to customers in the form of Wi-Fi. Both are making it easier to connect to wireless hot spots with their phones, in an effort to deliver fast data and clear calls in areas where neither might be possible.

In this respect, AT&T has been the most aggressive of any carrier. The company said this month that customers with a Windows Mobile phone could now connect freely at any of the company’s roughly 20,000 hot spots.

AT&T claims to sell more Windows Mobile phones than any other carrier, and with the introduction of Windows Mobile version 6.5 next month and new Windows phones like the HTC Touch Pro2, it stands to sell more. Now all Windows Mobile users can duck into a Starbucks, among the many other locations with AT&T Wi-Fi, and the phone will automatically route data and calls over a high-speed Internet connection.

Many people with iPhones and AT&T BlackBerrys don’t know it, but this perk has been available to them for months. The difficulty, of course, is finding a free hot spot when you need it.

Rather than roaming around and hoping to stumble into a Starbucks or an unlocked Wi-Fi signal, you can download one of the many hot-spot locating apps.

I found JiWire’s free Wi-Fi Finder iPhone app particularly useful. The software sniffs out your location and offers a list of nearby hot spots, free and paid. If you’re a customer of one of the big Wi-Fi networks, like iPass, Boingo or AT&T, the app will tell you where to find those.

Unfortunately, no comparable app exists for BlackBerrys or Windows Mobile phones. Users of those devices can download apps that help find free hot spots (like Free Wi-Fi Cafe Spots, for $3 on BlackBerry’s App World). Otherwise, you need to get online before leaving home, and make a list of hot spots you can use while on the road.

AT&T says its free Wi-Fi initiative isn’t a response to a recent avalanche of complaints from iPhone users that they cannot connect via 3G. Still, Jeff Bradley, the company’s senior vice president of devices, said that if more AT&T users shifted to Wi-Fi, the performance of the 3G network should improve.

T-Mobile, too, has put significant emphasis on Wi-Fi, which is good for users, because T-Mobile’s coverage quality trails that of its competitors in most regions.

T-Mobile’s HotSpot Network has more than 10,000 locations in the United States, thanks to roaming agreements with Boingo and AT&T, so the network covers Starbucks, many major airports and FedEx Kinko’s stores, among others. As with AT&T, the connection costs are included in a subscriber’s monthly data plan.

Some T-Mobile phones, like the MyTouch 3G or the G1, have available applications that will help users find a hot spot. These so-called Google phones, which operate on Google’s Android software platform, are fairly well served, in this respect, with T-Mobile’s HotSpot Locator app (free, in the Android Market).

The app garnered some harsh early reviews for frequent crashes, but T-Mobile recently said the problems had been fixed. In recent tests I experienced no problems.

Connecting to a hot spot is generally as easy as it is on AT&T. If you have an Android phone, like the MyTouch 3G or the G1, T-Mobile’s affiliated Wi-Fi networks will recognize your phone and automatically log you on. Other smartphones require users to log in with their phone number, at least initially. If you tweak the phone’s settings, it will log in automatically thereafter.

For an additional $10 a month, T-Mobile subscribers can make unlimited calls from any hot spot without racking up cellphone charges. On my tests, calls showed good voice quality, with no noticeable difference from the cellular calls on T-Mobile’s network.

Just 18 of T-Mobile’s 30 Wi-Fi capable phones can make calls this way, though, and the Android phones are not on that list. So check T-Mobile’s Web site to see if your phone qualifies.

Verizon, the nation’s biggest wireless carrier, has no similar Wi-Fi initiative, which is perhaps understandable since it has few Wi-Fi-enabled phones. And Sprint has no nationwide Wi-Fi initiative to speak of, either.

Sprint does have a horse in the wireless race, however. The company has invested in Clearwire Communications, a company that is rolling out WiMax, a technology that covers entire cities in a wireless Internet cloud.

This year, Clearwire began introducing its WiMax service in Baltimore and Las Vegas, and last month added Boise, Idaho; Bellingham, Wash.; and Portland, Ore., among other cities. By the end of next year, WiMax coverage will be available in New York, San Francisco and most of Texas, among other places.

Existing Sprint subscribers receive no discounts when they use the network. You can subscribe to the Mobile broadband service for $60 a month, and connect in any city where Sprint’s WiMax service is available, or users can pay $10 to connect for 24 hours.

As an alternative, Sprint and Verizon Wireless also sell Novatel’s MiFi 2200 ($100 with a two-year contract), a pocket-size device that converts a cellular signal into a Wi-Fi signal, which you can share with up to five devices nearby.

You need to be in an area with good cellular coverage for it to be of much use, so there’s little logic in owning one just to connect your phone to Wi-Fi. But if your circle of friends includes data-hogging iPhone users who can never seem to get on AT&T’s 3G network, you could probably extort a cup of coffee or two from them in exchange for a Wi-Fi fix.

Quick Calls

AT&T subscribers with individual Nation plans of at least $60 a month can now connect for unlimited minutes with five domestic phone numbers — landlines and competing wireless carriers included. The company’s A-List with Rollover feature, which is similar to Verizon’s Friends & Family plan and T-Mobile’s MyFaves plan, also applies to subscribers with family plans of at least $90 a month, who can choose 10 numbers. Sprint’s new competing plan, Any Mobile, Anytime excludes landlines. ... Research suggests that cellphone radiation poses no significant health danger, but the United States Food and Drug Administration still suggests hands-free headsets just to be safe. Now, the Environmental Working Group has released a study measuring the radiation levels of 1,200 cellphones. Check yours at ewg.org. ...The Google Voice app, which has been popular among BlackBerry and Android phone users, is now available — sort of — on the PalmOS, through gDial Pro. (Free, in Palm’s App Catalog.) ...Sprint recently cut the price on the Palm Pre to $150 with a two-year contract.

Western European Mobile Phone Market Showing Signs of Recovery

The Western European Mobile Phone market recorded another quarter of year-on-year declines in the second quarter of 2009 (2Q09). ccording to IDC, handset vendors shipped 42 million units to Western Europe, down 6% from 2Q08. The second quarter results are an improvement on the 14% decrease in 1Q09, but the crisis will continue to impact the region.

The switch from traditional mobile phones to converged mobile devices continued to be a major trend in Western Europe. Traditional mobile phones declined 12% during the quarter to 33.2 million units, and converged mobile devices (commonly known as smart phones) experienced a healthy 25% increase during the quarter to 8.8 million units, when compared to the same period last year.

"The first six months of the year were very challenging to both vendors and operators in Western Europe. The market was hit hard by the financial crisis, and demand mobile for phones slumped as never experienced before," said Francisco Jeronimo, European mobile devices research manager, IDC. "Since 2Q08 the market has been suffering from negative growth, with the bottom line being hit in 1Q09. Despite the slight improvement in the second quarter of 2009, we will continue to see negative growth throughout the coming quarters, with full market recovery being seen only in 2011."

For the full year, IDC believes that the Western European market will decline 10%. Demand for converged mobile devices will continue to grow, but will not be strong enough to reverse the overall market decline as they represent only 21% of total shipments. On the other hand, traditional mobile phones will continue to decline, though at a lower rate, as vendors adjust their portfolios, bringing more features to the low-end devices.

Among the biggest handset vendors, it is important to point out that Korean manufacturers continue to perform better than Scandinavian phone makers. For the first time, Samsung and LG together shipped more devices to Western Europe than Nokia. Nokia continues to be the market leader, with 36.3% market share, but the gap to Samsung, the second biggest vendor with 28.9% market share, continues to diminish. On the other hand, LG continues to challenge Sony Ericsson's market position, and the success of its touch screen handsets allowed LG to get 11.5% market share, the highest ever in Western Europe.

New Software Threatens Privacy of Cell Phone Users

UNDATED—Cell phones are under attack by a flood of covert, internet software designed to use cell phones against their users by invading their privacy.

Hackers are working through relatively inexpensive programs that can be ordered online and allow anyone to gain access to the private conversations and messages of cell phone users. Such hijacking websites promise the user easy access to track a cheating spouse or anyone else. Experts say nearly all of today's cell phone spyware can be traced to China or Russia.

As NBC's Eric Mansfield reports it's easier than you may realize for someone to hack into your cell phone.

NEC, Casio, Hitachi to Merge Mobile Phone Operations

Japanese technology companies NEC, Casio Computer and Hitachi plan to merge their mobile phone businesses by next April to reduce costs, boost technological expertise and expand market share, the companies said in a joint statement.

The deal will combine Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications Co, a joint venture formed by Casio and Hitachi five years ago, with NEC's mobile phone operations. Casio Hitachi Mobile develops mobile phones such as the Exilim that make use of Casio and Hitachi imaging technology as well as the Boulder, a rugged handset made from shock-resistance and water-resistance technologies from Casio's wristwatch unit.

The new company, NEC Casio Mobile Communications, hopes to bring together a range of product design and wireless technologies to boost competitiveness in the mobile phone market, the companies said.

NEC listed WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) and LTE (Long Term Evolution, also called 4G, or fourth-generation mobile telecommunications) wireless technologies as well as Linux software development and ultra-thin, low power handset designs as key technologies it brings to the new company.

NEC will own 70.74 percent of NEC Casio Mobile when the deal finalizes, while Casio will hold a 20 percent stake and Hitachi will own 9.26 percent of the new company.

NEC Casio Mobile will employ 2,200 people when its headquarters in Kawasaki City, Japan opens. Casio Hitachi Mobile currently has 506 workers.

Will Cliq Be Moto’s Next Razr?

Motorola yesterday unveiled the new Cliq, its first cellphone powered by Google’s Android operating system.

Motorola

Motorola’s Cliq phone

moto phone

It marks a change of course for the struggling handset maker, which decided last year to focus on Android and tabled several Windows Mobile smart phones.

The Cliq (overseas it will be called the Dext), like many phones, has a touch screen, sliding keyboard and digital camera, and Motorola is getting into the Android game as rivals HTC, Samsung and LG all have similar devices on the market or coming soon.

To differentiate this one, it’s promoting Motoblur, a user interface with a strong social-media bent. Customers can send status updates to multiple services, and see updates from Facebook, MySpace and Twitter on the main screen. Text messages, instant messages, work email and personal email will all show up, and they can customize the screen with other widgets as well.

Motorola

Motoblur backs up contacts, messages and customization information on its servers and syncs contact information between email and social-networking accounts. Customers can also track missing phones with its GPS or delete its data in a pinch. Like other new Android phones, Motorola is marketing Google’s growing app store as another bonus feature.

T-Mobile will carry the Cliq in the U.S., adding to its Android roster of the G1 and the myTouch 3G (it also sells the HTC Pulse in the United Kingdom). Orange, Telefonica and America Movil will carry it in parts of Europe and Latin America.

Motorola needs a new hit phone now that Razr’s popularity has long since faded. Is this it?

Android Phones Proliferate

Until this summer, U.S. consumers interested in owning an Android-powered cellphone were limited to T-Mobile’s G1. But the Google operating system is appearing in a slew of new handsets by HTC, Samsung, LG and Motorola.

HTC

HTC Tattoo, one of the cellphone maker’s new Android-powered devices

The specs for Samsung’s newest Android phone, the I5700 Galaxy Lite,

leaked in an online video that made its way around the Web Tuesday. The lower-cost, touch-screen device will have 1 GB of memory and a 3.2-megapixel camera. Its predecessor, the Galaxy I7500, also running Android, has 8 GB of memory and a five-megapixel camera. It launched in Europe over the summer.

g2 google phone

Also Tuesday, HTC introduced its fourth Android mobile phone, the Tattoo, which will be available in Europe in October. The Tattoo, like the recently unveiled Hero, will use HTC’s Sense interface to allow subscribers to personalize their home screen, and features a 3.2-megapixel camera and a 2.8-inch touch screen. Sprint begins selling the Hero at its stores and Best Buy locations on Oct. 11, but the Tattoo won’t reach the U.S. for a few more months.

Attendees of the IFA conference in Berlin were able to catch a glimpse of LG’s Etna Android, a phone with a sliding full keyboard, a three-inch touch screen and a 5-megapixel camera.

There’s more Android to come. At the Mobilize conference in San Francisco, Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha is expected to introduce the company’s first Android phone, and last week, T-Mobile said it would sell HTC’s Pulse. The phone is T-Mobile’s third Android phone and the first prepaid one, and will be available in the United Kingdom in October.

Recession Can't Stop Japan's Online Shoppers

It never rains but it pours for Japan's department store operators, once the driving force behind Japan's bubble-era consumerism. This summer already-flagging sales plunged further as recession-hit consumers cut back on spending. Nature didn't help out, either, as poor weather hurt sales.

Yet, even when the recession eases and the weather improves, don't expect a big bounce in sales. These days, Japan's recession-hit shoppers increasingly prefer to shop without ever leaving home.

The numbers are startling. Using data from the Japan Direct Marketing Assn. and Nomura Research Institute [NRI], the Nikkei daily estimates online shopping sales in Japan rose 22 percent to $67.2 billion. That's despite Japan's deepest recession in the postwar era savaging consumer confidence following the collapse of Lehman Brothers last fall.

If catalog shopping is also included, the figure rises to over $86 billion -- or more than is spent in Japan's department stores or ubiquitous convenience stores. Noritaka Kobayashi, senior consultant at Nomura Research Institute in Tokyo, says that while the growth will likely slow due to the recession, the consumer e-commerce market will continue to outstrip other forms of shopping. Excluding eating out and other forms of consumption that can't be easily conducted online, Kobayashi reckons $2.2 trillion of consumption could be made from computers and cell phones. "A growing number of people are simply avoiding the trouble of visiting stores," he says. "This market has a big growth potential."

Sugomori: "Chicks in the Nest"

What explains Japanese consumers' shift to shopping online? In the last year, as the global recession pounded the Japanese economy, pundits began using the term sugomori ["chicks in the nest"] to describe people who stay home to keep outside expenses to a minimum. Shopping online is not only often cheaper, especially when compared with expensive department stores, but it also saves on transportation and eating out while shopping.

Other reasons for the rapid expansion of online shopping in Japan are perhaps more compelling -- and Japan-specific. One factor is undoubtedly the widespread use of high-speed Internet. Fast broadband connections are the norm in Japan, while high-speed Internet-enabled china mobile phones are long established. NTT DoCoMo's 3G service is now in its 10th year of operation. The upshot: Japanese young and old are comfortable and experienced online.

According to the Internal Affairs & Communications Ministry, the mobile-commerce market in 2007 was worth $7.8 billion, a 29 percent increase from the previous year. The NRI, meanwhile, estimates mobile phones account for about 20 percent of online shopping and that share will increase to 24.5 percent by 2013. "Sooner or later it will be half," says Kobayashi. He adds that many teenagers buy games, books, or accessories via mobile phone but never use a PC for e-commerce

Superior Delivery Service

It helps that workers in Japan typically take long commutes, often in crowded trains. That leaves plenty of time to text, read the news, play games, or shop using a mobile phone.

Marketers are also getting savvier at appealing to mobile shoppers. While eBay isn't a big player in Japan, Rakuten, Amazon Japan, and Yahoo Japan are among Japan's most visited Web sites and are huge conduits for online shopping. Small players, meanwhile, are finding creative ways to woo Net-based shoppers. One example: In March, dozens of young women swarmed to the Tokyo Girls Collection fashion show. At the show, held in Tokyo's youthful Shibuya district, audience members could order what they saw on the runway using their mobile phones, via a dedicated retail site. In a single night, the show sold $615,000 worth of clothes.

Meticulous home-delivery service is another factor boosting online shopping. Delivery companies such as Yamato Transport, Sagawa Express, and JP Express are famously reliable. The companies usually offer to deliver within a two-hour time slot selected by the customer and are rarely late. They are also remarkably fast. Yamato, for instance, has a tieup with Amazon and other mail-order companies by which it offers next-morning delivery for orders made by midnight the previous day. And if the customer prefers, deliveries can be made to one of Japan's 50,000 convenience stores. For only a small extra fee, delivery firms will deliver frozen or chilled products, leading to the rapid expansion of online purchasing of fresh produce, such as freshly caught crab from Hokkaido or pineapple from subtropical Okinawa.

Payment options have evolved to meet customer needs and soothe fraud concerns. For consumers who don't want to input credit-card numbers over the Internet, Yamato and others offer a pay-on-delivery service. "These finely tuned delivery services are boosting the mail-order business," says Masao Ueda, chief researcher at the Distribution Economics Institute of Japan.

How Much Radiation Does Your Cell Phone Emit?

The radiation from our cell phones has long been suspected of causing a variety of health issues and some devices do emit more radiation than others, according to a review by the Environmental Working Group.

While there is no hard link between cancer and cell phones, a recent study by the government watchdog group shows an increased risk for people who have used them for at least 10 years, USA Today reported.

The phones found to be emitting the least amount of radiation were two versions of the Samsung Impression and the Motorola Razr V8.

The ones emitting the most were the Motorola Moto VU204, the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G and the Kyocera Jax S1300.

The Federal Communications Commission, which sets standards for cell phone radiation, requires that all devices be rated at 1.6 W/kg or lower.

The industry insists the devices all fall within federal guidelines and are harmless, but recent studies showing increased risk for brain and mouth tumors for people who have used cell phones for at least 10 years," said Jane Houlihan, senior vice president of research at the Washington-based group.

Google Android Gaining as Mobile Phone Market Sleepe

News Analysis: Google's Android phone doesn't get the kind of respect it might deserve. But Android's features and performance are allowing it to sign partnerships with multiple phone manufacturers, including T-Mobile, HTC, Motorola, LG and Acer. Soon its main competitors—Apple, RIM and Windows Mobile—might need to watch out.

Google's Android platform isn't often cited when end users discuss the leaders in the mobile phone market. Typically, those discussions are dominated by companies such as Apple, Research In Motion and even Microsoft. But it's Google that's quietly gaining ground in the space.

The company is behind more phone releases running its Android operating system than you might think. Aside from the T-Mobile G1—the first Android-based phone to hit store shelves—HTC's MyTouch 3G is currently offered to consumers. HTC also announced the Tattoo Tuesday that promises some neat functionality for European users. It's the company's fourth Android-based phone.

But HTC isn't alone. Companies like Motorola, LG and even Acer have signed on to produce Android-based products. Google's partners in the Open Handset Alliance have joined at such a rapid rate that the company hopes to have up to 20 Android-based phones available by the end of 2009. It could more than double that number by the end of 2010. And yet, Android doesn't receive the kind of respect or attention Apple does. It's an afterthought when it comes time to analyze the mobile phone market.

Admittedly, that is mainly due to the fact that Android doesn't hold the kind of market share its competitors do. In fact, it's trailing far behind Apple's iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry devices and even Windows Mobile.

But it may not stay that way much longer. Unlike Apple, which has tied its future to one product, Google decided to follow in Microsoft's footsteps and open up its software to vendors. And unlike Microsoft's Windows Mobile, which provides a subpar experience, Google's Android mobile operating system is a fine alternative to the iPhone.

The Experience

In the cell phone market, providing an experience is a key success factor. If a phone doesn't have a touch-screen, doesn't sport some kind of multitouch technology and doesn't have an App Store, most users won't find as much value in it. Those are requirements that Apple has put in place, and like it or not, its competitors have to play ball.

And Google is playing ball. Its Android operating system boasts outstanding software that appeals to just about anyone who uses it. In fact, it's a nice alternative to Apple's iPhone software.

Beyond that, the software is responsive when users tap the touch-screens. And for the most part, Android phones boast a design and feel that compares nicely to anything Apple releases. Simply put, Android phones have the looks, design and software to make them a compelling product for end users.

The App Store

But it doesn't end there. Users are still looking for an app store. Although the Android Marketplace doesn't have the more than 65,000 applications offered in Apple's App Store, Google has done a good job of bringing apps to its platform. Right now, the store has over 3,000 applications. Although that number pales in comparison to Apple's store, Google's marketplace has many more applications than RIM's BlackBerry World (about 2,000 applications) and Palm's Pre (approximately 30 applications).

There might be more variety in Apple's App Store, but many of the applications that users find in Apple's market can be downloaded onto Android phones from the Android Marketplace. Porting applications designed for the iPhone to Android-based phones isn't difficult for developers. That's a key feature as Google tries to bring more apps to its store.

Ubiquity

But perhaps the most important reason why Google has a good chance to become a leader in the mobile phone market is its strategy. Instead of offering a single phone, like Apple does, Google has partnered with several vendors to provide the software and let them do all the hard work of selling the devices. And since it's an open-source platform, those vendors can tweak the operating system to make it unique to their vision.

It's doubtful that any single Android-based phone will sell better than the hiPhone. Apple's product commands too much attention in the marketplace for that to happen. But it's not beyond the realm of possibility for Android itself to capture more market share than Apple's venerable device. With more available products, a compelling selection of apps and some nice software, many users might find that it's a solid alternative to the iPhone.

And in the process, they might just find that, at least so far, Android's experience is second only to the iPhone's.

So maybe it's time Android gets a little more respect.
