Google phone strategy takes off

Google Inc has won a seat at the smartphone table.

Two years after the Web search leader announced its plan to barge into the market, a dozen phones are using Google’s Android mobile operating software, including Motorola Inc’s heavily promoted Droid phone.

And software developers have created more than 12,000 games and other applications that run on Android phones, second only to the 100,000 apps on Apple Inc’s iPhone.

“This is a platform that a lot of people were very sceptical about and it’s just exploded,” Brigantine Advisors analyst Colin Gillis said about Google’s Android.

But Google’s success getting handset makers and wireless carriers to adopt its free smart mobile phone software has not yet translated into a material benefit to finances.

Unlike Nokia or Research in Motion, which make money from hardware sales, Google is looking to prominently place its software and services on a new breed of mobile devices and gain direct access to valuable consumer data that can be used to sell ads for premium prices.

This month, Google announced the US$750 million (RM2.5 billion) acquisition of AdMob, whose technology and network allow ads to be placed on mobile websites and within iPhone and Android apps.

Google, which recorded about US$22 billion in revenue in 2008, doesn’t break out its mobile ad sales or disclose how its rates for mobile ads compare to traditional online ads.GOOGLE G3 MOBILE PHONE

“I think we’ll start to notice it at the end of 2010, and it will be really material in five years,” Gillis said of the impact of the mobile business on Google’s overall financial performance.

APP DEVELOPERS KEY

Despite Google’s success so far, it still has a long way to go to challenge the iPhone’s dominance of the market.

Analysts say the variety of phone makers producing Android phones could result in a less consistent product than competitors like the iPhone and Palm Inc’s Pre, in which the hardware and software are tightly integrated.

Avian Securities analyst Matthew Thornton said Google’s biggest challenge will be to ensure that a surge of Android phones from different vendors doesn’t create a potential for incompatible apps, which would turn developers off.

“They want the broadest audience, the most developers they can get on that platform,” Thornton said.

French mobile games company Gameloft said yesterday that it and other software developers were cutting back investment in developing games and other apps for Android, mostly due to the weakness of its application store.

“It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone. Google has not been very good to entice customers to actually buy products. On Android, nobody is making significant revenue,” said Gameloft finance director Alexandre Rochefort.

Media reports have suggested that Google is building its own device to sell directly to consumers. This could give it greater control of its smartphone strategy, but could threaten relationships with hardware partners like Motorola.

Google Engineering Vice President Andy Rubin, who oversees Android development and strategy, told Reuters the company has already taken an active role in developing some Android phones such as the HTC G1 and the Droid.

He described reports of a Google-manufactured phone as rumour and speculation.

“We like working collaboratively with our partners,” Rubin said, when asked if it made sense for Google to get into the hardware business. “We don’t necessarily want to acquire the expertise to take over ownership of the design of hardware. We’re a software company.”

NOT UNIFORM

Google hopes it has gained an advantage with its recently released Google Maps Navigation, which provides real-time, turn-by-turn driving directions and weaves in unique features like the company’s archive of street photographs.

But the navigation app only works on smartphones with the 2.0 version of Android — like Droid — and not on the china phones on the market. This highlights the lack of a uniform Android experience for consumers and developers to rely on.

Google’s Rubin said the variety of Android systems is no different than the situation in the PC market, where multiple versions of Microsoft Corp’s Windows exist.

Google has procedures and incentives in place to ensure that apps are compatible on different Android phones, he said.

And while Android doesn’t have nearly as many apps as the iPhone, Rubin said Android will stand out for the functionality of its apps, rather than their sheer quantity.

“Does it have every different type of application to slice and dice and all that squeaky toys and stuff that’s out there? I don’t care,” Rubin said. “I just want the best one in each category.”

Apple IPhone Will Outsell Rivals in China, Chang Xiaobing Says

China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. Chairman Chang Xiaobing said he expects Apple Inc.’s iPhone to become China’s best-selling smart phone, countering skepticism by analysts who say the handset is too expensive.

“We’re very confident about the market position of the iPhone,” Chang said in an interview in Hong Kong yesterday. Unicom, China’s second-biggest wireless carrier, started an advertising program for the device this week, he said.

Unicom sold fewer iPhones than analysts anticipated in its debut week after offering the product for as much as 7,999 yuan ($1,172), compared with $299 in the U.S. The iPhone faces competition from Nokia Oyj and Research in Motion Ltd., and handsets that run China Mobile Ltd.’s OPhone software in the world’s biggest wireless market.

3GS

“In some markets where vendors get their marketing right, the iPhone is already the best-selling smart phone,” said Aloysius Choong, a Singapore-based analyst at research company IDC. “Unicom must lower its prices if it wants to access the mass market for the iPhone.”

Unicom’s iPhone sales since its debut last month “could have been higher,” Chang, 52, said in his first interview with overseas media since he became head of the carrier in 2004. The Beijing-based company beat bigger rival China Mobile Ltd. to become the first operator to offer the device in the Asian country, where more than 700 million people have mobile phones.

Unicom will charge customers 7,999 yuan initially for the 32 GB version of its IPhone 3GS, before refunding all or part of the cost through the duration of the contracts. That’s higher than the $299 paid by customers at AT&T Inc. in the U.S., and Chinese consumers may obtain the handset through unofficial distributors, the so-called gray market, at lower prices, according to consultancy BDA China.

Gray Market

“Gray-market sales won’t be very significant,” Chang said. Unicom’s sales of the device in China will “definitely surpass” shipments through unauthorized distributors, he said.

Chinese consumers may buy 1 million iPhones this year from gray-market distributors, adding to the more than 1.5 million already sold through this channel, according to BDA estimates.

Unicom shares fell 1.7 percent to HK$10.50 in Hong Kong trading today, and have gained 13 percent this year, compared with the 59 percent advance by the benchmark Hang Seng Index.

The Chinese carrier shipped more than 5,000 iPhones as of Nov. 3, after starting sales on Oct. 30, the company said earlier this month. Apple sold 1 million of its iPhone 3GS device within three days of its June debut in North America

Acceptable Sales

“Sales were acceptable,” Chang said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. Unicom may review its marketing strategy for the iPhone after spending more time to assess sales results, he said.

Chinese consumers bought 11 million smart phones last year, a total that may triple by 2013, according to IDC’s Choong. Nokia’s E71 and 5800 are among the best-selling models, he said.

Unicom aims to sign up 1 million subscribers to its third- generation mobile-phone services each month, matching the additions in October, when the carrier started the commercial roll-out of its high-speed wireless services, Chang said.

Revenue from new 3G users and a reduction of capital spending on networks will lead to an improvement in Unicom’s earnings, Chang said. The carrier last month posted third- quarter net income of 2.72 billion yuan, the lowest quarterly profit since a reorganization of the company last year, on higher 3G-related costs.

“We are now focused on subscriber growth,” Chang said yesterday. “Investors should be happy, we’re keeping costs low, and maintaining high growth.”

3G Users

Unicom’s 3G user additions last month makes the company China’s leading provider of the high-speed service, Chang said. China Mobile, the country’s biggest wireless carrier, had 1.66 million 3G users at the end of September, while China Telecom Corp. said it added 3 million mobile-phone users that month, without giving a breakdown between subscribers for 2G and 3G services.

China had about 720 million mobile-phone subscriptions at the end of September, according to government data.

Mobile Phone Users get Connected-As for less

VoicePipes announced today the immediate availability of it's new Connected-As service for mobile phone users offering the nation's lowest cost for mobile-to-landline calling. Available at their Internet site www.Connected-As.co.nz, mobile calls to landlines cost just 29 cents. Mobile-to-mobile, no matter the carrier, are just 49 cents.

In announcing the new service, VoicePipes’ Managing Director Mark Sayer explained that Kiwis have been paying inflated mobile rates for too long and he was determined to help. Acknowledging the presence of new entrants 2degrees and Slingshot to the market, he stated that it still hadn't forced the major incumbent operators to lower their prices. “Call prices for both Vodafone and Telecom's new XT network, with a pre-paid plan, are a staggering 89 cents," states Mr Sayer. "These are some of the highest prices for like plans in the OECD.”
