China IPhone Pictures Posted on News Site

A Chinese news Web site has posted pictures that it claims show the iPhone model being tested for release in China, adding to expectations that the phone will launch there soon.

The pictures were posted on Chinese portal Sina.com.cn on Friday morning and showed an iPhone with simplified Chinese characters in its display and inscribed on the back of the handset. Simplified characters are used in mainland China and Singapore, but Singaporean iPhones don't have Chinese inscription on the case. (Hong Kong and Taiwan use more complex traditional characters)

The iPhone in the pictures also carries China's "Environmental Protection Use Period" mark, which indicates the number of years of normal operation during which hazardous or toxic substances included in the product will not leak or change in a way that harms the environment or human health. In the case of the iPhone pictured that length of time is 10 years.

Sina.com.cn later replaced the pictures with a single one that had most of the phone's rear inscription obscured.

Apple has held months of talks with China Unicom, one of the country's state-owned mobile carriers, on offering the iPhone in China. In a sign that the two could be approaching a deal, Apple this month submitted an iPhone to Chinese regulatory authorities for tests to obtain a network access license, according to analysts.

The iPhone in the Sina pictures had "China Unicom 3G" displayed beside the signal strength meter on its screen. The back of the handset was inscribed with the letters WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), the 3G standard being promoted by China Unicom.

A China Unicom spokeswoman said the company is still in talks with Apple but has not reached any formal agreement on the iPhone. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

Apple said in April that it hoped to start iPhone sales in China within the next year.

China Unicom may launch the iPhone at the end of September to coincide with the expansion of its 3G coverage to 280 cities, investment bank China International Capital Corporation said in a research note this month.

"There is essentially no longer any doubt about the introduction of the iPhone," the report said.

The iPhone is already very popular among fashion-conscious urban Chinese, who bring the handsets back from abroad or buy smuggled or fake versions at local electronics markets.

Goodbye, Windows Mobile. Hello, Windows Phone

Microsoft plans to change the name of its Windows Mobile operating system, the company let slip at a recent event. Instead of Windows Mobile, the OS will be known as Windows Phone, the Inquirer reports.

Microsoft revealed the branding change at a recent event, the Inquirer says, noting that the Windows Phone branding will be applied to Windows Mobile 6.1, the upcoming 6.5 version, and to Windows Mobile 7, which is expected sometime in 2010. It is yet unclear when the new Windows Phone naming system will be implemented, though.

There is no groundbreaking reason for the name change, it seems. Microsoft's word on this is that they want to make it easier for consumers with the Windows Mobile versioning and compatibility.

As we reported back in May, Windows Mobile 6.5 is ready, as in sent to manufacturers. And as it was the case back then, Windows Mobile 6.5 will still deliver too little, too late; many expect the mobile OS to be already out of date by the time it arrives in phones, which should happen this fall. Windows Mobile 7, however, is set to deliver a greatly improved feature set over 6.5, adding a new suite of Windows Mobile apps (IE, email, SMS, photo/music management) and zooming/scaling capabilities to the user interface via multitouch.

The Windows Mobile brand is a very popular one. But if Microsoft plans to rejuvenate the popularity of Windows Mobile, without making any changes to the actual products, then it would be quite pointless for end users.

T-Mobile's latest phone with Google's Android software is better, but far from perfect

Less than a year after T-Mobile and HTC released the first smart phone using Google's Android operating system, the wireless operator and the handset maker are back with a sleeker device that takes advantage of recent software updates.

The myTouch 3G has plenty of hardware and software kinks — and a $200 price tag that's $50 higher than the predecessor, the G1, both with a two-year contract. But advances to the operating system may draw a smattering of cheers.

The myTouch, which goes on sale Aug. 5, looks similar to the G1, but replaces the bulk of its predecessor's slide-out keyboard with a slimmer, lighter frame that sports a touch-screen keyboard like that of the iPhone. Its face is still dominated by a long screen, but it has a few more buttons below the screen, including one that offers a shortcut to Google's search engine.

Besides being lighter, the myTouch has better battery life than the G1. It's rated for up to seven hours of talk time, two more than the older phone, and it had no trouble lasting through a day of use that included talking, listening to music, surfing the Web and checking e-mail.

It is also zippier overall thanks to the Android 1.5 software, which T-Mobile began rolling out to G1 users as well in May.

Taking photos on the G1 using the first iteration of Android was often sluggish and painful, as you never knew when the shutter would finally click. It's faster on the myTouch, though still slower than it should be.

You can also take videos now, something I could do on the G1 before the software update with a less-than-impressive third-party application, and there's a quick link for budding auteurs to upload them to Google's video-sharing site YouTube.

One helpful new feature specific to the myTouch is the ability to check work e-mail through Microsoft Exchange. This could make the handset more attractive to business users who want round-the-clock access to both their personal and work e-mail accounts on the same device.

Hey stupid! Drop the mobile phone and drive

"So yeah, this research says there's little, if any, difference between hand-held and hands-free phones, cause either way, the cognitive distraction is significant enough to degrade a driver's performance ... so I said the heck with that, I ain't blowin' my money on Bluetooth ... hang on, I gotta answer this text from my wife."

While heroic politicians all over America are mandating bicycle helmets, it's still legal to drive 4,000 pounds of steel 60 miles an hour while your brain is turned to the moron setting.

Oh you know exactly who and what I’m talking about. You know because you are that one guy in all the world who is perfectly capable of operating your automobile and cellular device simultaneously without endangering yourself or those driving around you … all of whom are also operating their automobiles and cellular devices simultaneously, because they too are quite certain that they are that one guy … but of course they’re wrong because it’s you who is that one guy, not any of them … morons.

Seriously. Dang. Isn’t it time we, as a people, owned up to the cognitive dissonance going down whenever we tsk-tsk terrible tales of texting bus drivers, then yack away behind the wheel while driving way the hell over the speed limit or coasting through a four-way stop with a carpool full of kids? We should be shocked and appalled that a seven-year-old recommendation by National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration that drivers not use china mobile phones — not even hands-free — only surfaced Tuesday.

Yet as safety advocates continue to battle politics and the long reach of the mobile phone industry, we, of our own free will, continue to blithely endanger the lives of others by partaking in unnecessary wireless communication empirically proven to be deadly.

The facts are these: The NHTSA’s no-mobile phones-while-driving recommendations of 2002 and 2003 were made public Tuesday only because The Center for Auto Safety and Public Citizen, two public interest groups, filed a lawsuit to obtain the documents under the Freedom of Information Act.

These recommendations, along with a proposal for a long-term study of 10,000 drivers to assess the safety risk posed by mobile phone use behind the wheel, were shelved, according to those quoted in The New York Times, for several “larger political considerations.”

These “larger political considerations” include, but are not limited to fear that Congress would accuse the NHTSA of overstepping its bounds from suggestion-making into lobbying, alienating stakeholders unwilling to alienate multitask-while-motoring voters and blah blah blah blah blah ….

Around the time of NHTSA 2002 report, mobile phone subscribers made up more than half of the United States population, and highway safety researchers estimated driver/mobile phone-related accidents to be the cause of 955 fatalities and 240,000 accidents overall. mobile phone subscribers now make up 87 percent of the U.S. population, according to the CTIA-The Wireless Association, the mobile phone industry trade group.

Here’s some more numbers for you: Motorists talking on a phone are four times as likely to crash as other drivers, and are as likely to cause an accident as someone with a 0.08 blood alcohol content, according to research. Do you even want to think about your loved ones cruising around with a road full of texters?

There are plenty of people out there who have a hard enough time texting while simply walking. Last year the American College of Emergency Physicians issued a warning regarding serious texting accidents around the country involving text-messaging pedestrians, bicyclists, even roller skaters and horseback riders.

Subjectively, Technotica encourages any law that would outlaw mobile phone talking or texting in grocery stores and elevators, let alone while driving or walking.

Those who work here in midtown Manhattan complain constantly about tourists crapping up the sidewalks by stopping short to snap some photos. But how many buses have been missed (by me) because of them and their big dumb BlackBerrys?

Still, BlackBerry blockage at the curb is not the deathtrap that is mobile phone use and driving. If I seem harsh, perhaps I can’t relate. Not since seventh grade (and with the exception of texting old-timey obscenities to one particular frenemy), have I burned to talk to someone so much so that car insurance considerations become secondary.

Further, I am now, and have always been, that jackass who will ask you if you plan to call out or answer your mobile phone while driving before I agree to get into your car, and I will jump out if you, or the cab driver, insist on doing otherwise.

I’ve lost count on how many friends I’ve hung up on once I realized he or she called me from a moving vehicle with steering wheel in hand. Hey, they knew I was a jackass going in. And frankly, when it comes to mobile phones and driving, being this kind of jackass is best for all concerned.

iPhone Security: Not Beefy Enough for Businesses?

The iPhone has evolved from a casual smart phone into one with the potential to serve businesses across the globe. Its latest iteration, the iPhone 3GS, comes packaged with an encryption feature supposedly perfect for sensitive information stored on the device.

But information has surfaced that the iPhone 3GS can be hacked in two minutes with readily available freeware. Is the business world ready to ditch the tried-and-true Blackberry in favor of Apple's offering?

Jonathan Zdziarski -- iPhone developer and hacker extraordinaire -- showed Wired how easy it is to tear the 3GS apart and expose data. "Apple may be technically correct that [the iPhone 3GS] has an encryption piece in it, but it's entirely useless toward security," Zdziarski said. He added that the iPhone 3GS is about as secure as the iPhone 3G and the first-generation iPhone, the latter two having no encryption features whatsoever.

Zdziarski's demonstration bypassed the encryption process in two minutes. As he extracted data from the phone, the iPhone itself began to decrypt everything being pulled, almost as if it wanted to be stripped bare. Hacking is done easily with available jailbreaking tools such as Red Sn0w and Purple Ra1n. Once that process is completed, hackers can then install the Secure Shell client to yank data and plop it onto a computer's hard drive.

Despite these facts, businesses have already begun adopting the iPhone as a productivity tool. But according to a study conducted by Vanson Bourne, IT decision makers are wary of the iPhone. Only 29 percent believed their departments were prepared to use the hiPhone as a business tool, and 64 percent have not implemented steps to protect against threats targeted at the iPhone. The reason was that they aren't used widely enough in businesses to warrant such measures.

Apple should beef up its encryption code immediately. Corporations who are already using the iPhone deserve this update so potential data theft can be avoided. Businesses who haven't yet decided whether to choose the Blackberry or the iPhone should take this information under advisement.

Apple confirms death of iPhone worker in China

Apple confirmed on Tuesday the death of a man who worked at an iPhone plant in China.

According to various Chinese media reports, the worker at Chinese manufacturer Foxconn committed suicide last week after a fourth-generation iPhone prototype for which he was responsible went missing.

"We are saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee, and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death," Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet told CNET on Tuesday. "We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect."

Apple did not comment on the details of the worker's death, allegations regarding Foxconn's questioning of the worker, or the status of the allegedly missing phone prototype.

Various English-language sites have been repeating and translating Chinese media reports.

According to Chinese media, 25-year-old Sun Danyong was responsible for shipping iPhone prototypes to Apple. Danyong reported the missing device to Foxconn after realizing that one of the 16 iPhones he received was no longer in his possession.

Foxconn is Apple's longtime manufacturing partner in China. Apple has used the company to manufacture all of its iPods and, more recently, all of the iPhone models.

Foxconn did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Korea's LG Dials Up Cellphone Growth, Gaining Market Share on Rivals

SEOUL -- While the recession forces a sharp decline in global sales of mobile phones, LG Electronics Co. is posting some of its strongest growth ever and taking market share from mobile phone rivals.

LG last year passed Motorola Inc. and Sony Ericsson to become the world's third-largest seller of cellphones, shipping just over 100 million units, or about 8.6% of the global 1.17 billion.

This year, with the overall cellphone market expected to fall more than 10%, some analysts predict LG's cellphone shipments will rise between 10% to 20%. The division's growth is expected to help LG post a profit when it reports quarterly results Wednesday at a time that many consumer-electronics companies are struggling with deep losses.

One of the South Korean firm's strategies is a business process in which each product has an individual responsible for it from the moment it moves out of the research lab until its last day on a store shelf.

"In the past, we didn't have people who owned the performance of a product," says Kim Myung-ho, a vice president in LG's cellphone division. "Now that we do, the number of hit phones we have is increasing."

The system allows LG, which introduces about 50 phones a year, to quickly recognize when a model is performing poorly and shorten its product life, something that happened with several camera phones over the past two years.

"If we have 10 phones, perhaps one or two will be hits that sell millions of units, two or three more will make targets and the rest will fail," Mr. Kim says. "If a certain product is not going to be successful, we want to move on."

The system also allows product managers to quickly boost supplies and marketing in areas where a particular phone is selling well. On Monday, LG said a new phone called Cookie -- touch-screen models with colorful cases for younger buyers -- has shipped five million units since its release in November. LG has also been boosted by new versions of its popular Chocolate and Vu phones.

James Kim, an analyst at Nomura International Ltd. in Hong Kong, says LG is experiencing the "strongest momentum" in its history. He forecasts a 6% climb in LG cellphone shipments in the second quarter, with bigger gains in the second half of the year. He expects LG's cellphone revenue in the second quarter to jump 34% to about $4 billion due to an upward shift in average selling price.

By contrast, the industry's leading seller, Nokia Corp., last week said it expected to lose some market share this year. And the second-biggest seller, LG's crosstown rival Samsung Electronics Co., forecasts marginal growth at best.

LG laid the groundwork for its performance about two years ago when then-new Chief Executive Nam Yong restructured the electronics maker so that each item had a product business leader, a position known as a PBL within LG, responsible for it.

The position is now common in all of LG's divisions, including home appliances and consumer electronics, but the work involved in it has been refined in the cellphone business, which introduces the highest volume of products and copes with the widest mix of targets for profitability and time in the market.

"LG is very good at producing models for one geography and tweaking them to meet specific [wireless] carrier needs," says Avi Greengart, an analyst at research firm Current Analysis. "They are extremely responsive."

Seo Hyung-won, the PBL for LG's Viewty touch-screen phone that launched in 2007 and was refreshed last month as Viewty Smart, says he updated the first version's jog-wheel control and the lens cover on its camera after early customers complained about them.

But he also noted some stumbles in the process. Initially, Mr. Seo and his peers frequently traveled to gauge market response to products, which drew complaints from factories and sales offices that the managers were difficult to reach. "The regional offices were sometimes frustrated with absent PBLs," he says. "Now, we try to coordinate trip schedules better."

Driven by the cellphone unit's growth, LG's second-quarter performance is likely to stand out as the consumer-electronics industry slogs through the current downturn. Analysts believe LG will report a profit for the quarter near its year-ago level, when it had its best ever April-June period.

Part of LG's second-quarter success is also timing. LG's appliance division, which accounts for 25% of revenue, is seasonally strongest in the quarter. Both LG and Samsung have been hurt less than rivals in other countries because they benefited from the devaluation of South Korea's currency, which made prices of the goods they shipped out of the country more competitive.

Mobile phone directory crashes as users rush to take numbers off

A controversial mobile phone directory has been suspended after being inundated with requests from people who want their details removed.

118800.co.uk said it is not taking requests either via the website or over the phone for people's mobile numbers.

The company said on its website that it is making "major improvements" to its beta service. It said all ex-directory requests made by people in the directory to date are being processed, and further requests will be taken once the service is back up and running.

"We will take further ex-directory requests when the service resumes. We will not be taking ex-directory requests by phone or text whilst the service is not operational."

The directory holds about 15 million phone numbers, with the owners reported to be hoping to increase this to 42 million numbers.

Earlier this week the website appeared to crash under a traffic surge after china mobile phone users decided they wanted their numbers taken off the directory.

Bob Dowson, director at website monitoring specialist Site Confidence, said, "Prior to the launch of the service, media coverage suggested that many people would have concerns over the privacy of their details and want to remove their numbers from the directory, yet it appears that 118 800 has completely underestimated demand."

The company said it would be back "as soon as possible" with an improved service.

If you want to use a cell phone in Europe, here's how

Much of the world outside North America, including all of Europe, uses the GSM system for wireless calls. Even if you have a GSM phone — from AT&T, T-Mobile, and a few smaller companies — it may not work in Europe.

For wireless GSM service in Europe, you need either a one- or dual band GSM phone designed for Europe or a three- or four-band phone you can use both at home and in Europe.

If your phone is new, chances are it's already quad band . If not, you can upgrade to a quad band cell phone, at attractive prices if you extend your contract a year or two.

But you also need a SIM card — a small memory card that holds the phone's number and other data — that works in Europe.

As long as you have (or get) a three- or four-band GSM phone, the most convenient approach is to use it with your regular number. Just have your wireless company "enable" it for overseas. Ask your local outlet or call your provider; you shouldn't have to pay anything upfront.

The upside to keeping your own number is that people know it and don't have to cope with new numbers and international dialing codes. But using your own number has two downsides:

# You may get calls at odd hours from people who don't know you're overseas.

# European service with your regular phone is expensive. Currently, in most of Europe, AT&T charges $1.29 per minute for both outgoing and incoming calls; T-Mobile charges 99 cents
Advertisement
Quantcast
to $1.49. Both charge 35 to 55 cents for each text message; both may offer promotional packages that reduce those rates a bit.

You can cut the cost of calls considerably by buying temporary local SIM cards that allow you to make and receive calls throughout Europe. Many such cards provide for free incoming calls, free outgoing local calls in parts of Europe, and cheap calls to the United States.

If you're visiting only one country, a single-country prepaid SIM card generally provides the lowest rates. Local calls and incoming calls are free, and you pay as little as 8 cents a minute for calls to the United States.

One-country SIM card prices start about $30, depending on how many minutes of initial time are included.

If you're visiting several different countries, you can get a multicountry SIM card that also provides free incoming calls, free local calls in some places and calls to the United States for about 50 cents a minute. Prices start at about $50.

Each European SIM card has its own number, and people calling you from the United States have to dial it as an international number to get you. Most such SIM cards are prepaid, with a stored value. You can replenish the value online, by credit card.

Most AT&T or T-Mobile GSM phones are "locked" to your regular SIM card when you first get them and must be unlocked before you can use a local European SIM card.

You can unlock some phones by inputting a special code you can buy from one of several online outfits, others by having someone unlock it for you: Look in your classified directory for a local wireless specialist or Google "unlocking GSM phones."

None of this works if your regular wireless phone isn't GSM. In that case, your only wireless option is to rent or buy a GSM phone for your trip.

You can buy single-country or multicountry SIM cards from outfits such as Telestial Planet Omni ,SIMphoneE and UStronics . These agencies also provide rental and one-use phones.

And for more information on overseas wireless phones, log onto the Travel Insider and Global Phone Wiz .

Where to Buy Cheap Cell Phones

Cell phones matter in all walks of lives. Owning this communication gadget on the go does not mean you could continuously use it in your whole lives. They offer limited service period - commonly, mobile phones might appear dysfunctions after 3 to 5 years. Plus, mobile phones update amazingly fast. We users always unintentionally spend a lot on these small electronics. However, a cell phone with lower price could help save huge in our pocket, especially for those who pursue fashion and style.

The same type china mobile phones probably differ a lot in their prices in different selling places. Where to find a cheap cell phone? As we all know, sellers are always the winner. Plus, quite a few of us doesn’t know the real original prices. So we need to choose the buying places very carefully. Here, I will recommend the following places for your consideration:

1. Online electronics stores.

They could be wholesale mobile phone or retail. These stores always offer deals, coupons and promotion in different period and different stores provide different activities. So remember to compare prices in these places before you make up your decision.

2. Online dropshippers.

Most of those shippers are wholesale electronics sellers. They always have hundreds to millions direct manufacturers. Unlike you do business with foreign-trade business companies, no commission exists. These dropshippers could offer you factory price. And “Wholesale” doesn’t mean these sellers don’t support retail selling. The retail prices they give are usually lower than retailers on the market. And you could save more if you buy more, for example, at China-Phone.org, you need to spend $164 to get 1 NOKIA N97 GSM mobile Phone, buy 2 - 9, the price drop to US$159, 10 - 49, US$154 etc.

3. Small shops on the market.

Small shops always provide cheaper prices than large malls or brand stores. But be alert about fake or shoddy products. These shops are always informal. There are many snakes exist. You are easily to be cheated if you are a newbie. If you have friends who are experts of cell phones, bring his/her when you shop.

4. From your familiar people.

If you have someone who can get you a phone at factory price, why not buy from him/her. But remember to check the prices before you ask him/her to buy for you, in case your he/she is not reliable enough.

No matter where you buy your mobile phones, make preparation at first. Check relevant information about the phone you intended to buy. That is the first step if you want to avoid being deceived.

Mobile Phones Roaming Fee in China

Are you cell phones users in China? How do you think of Chinese roaming fee? Nowadays, cell phone could be bought at very low prices, as we have a wealth of shopping channels like China mobile phones sellers and retailers. But the money we spend on using this modern gadget is huge, especially for those who travel frequently inside this country. The following are the comparison between America and China.
America
No roaming fee, even for the long distance call.
China Mainland
Call - charged 0.6 RMB per minute for making calls, 0.4 RMB for receiving calls outside their local service area. Text message fee - the same no matter in the local area or not, 10 cents per message.
Obviously, Americans could save much more money than Chinese. Why couldn’t China cancel the fee? A Chinese telecom expert concluded the following two reasons:
1. Our telecom business is still not adequately mature. The economic development is not equal between China east and west. The east develops very fast, so the equipment utilization rate is high and the unit communication fee is low. But the west is on the contrary. In order to ensure high income of western telecom, the company has to restrict mass use of eastern people’s phone in the western area.
2. Telecom company wants to help western-area company accumulate funds quickly and develop their business, so they separate telecom markets in different areas in China. Most Chinese combat such kind of fee, as the cost of the roaming fee is nearly zero. Chinese telecom company, a state-operated company, has made big improvement these years, especially in the year of 2009. Now, we could see the dawn of hope of canceling the roaming fee.
China Telecom is the first to try to cancel the roaming fee. Let’s see its telecom policy in Jiang Su Province. From 1st, May, you will receive calls for free no matter where you are in the province. The calling to other cities province-wide belong to long-distance call. However, this service could only be used by the Tiyi Cell phone users who have booked my e home packages of E6 and E9.
I hope I don’t need to pay the roaming fee one day no matter where I am in China and what package I use on my mobile phone.

If you rely on your mobile phone, invest in back-up battery

Imagine having to make an emergency phone call only to find out your mobile phone battery is dead. Good luck finding a pay phone.

If you rely on your mobile phone to stay connected - to family and friends, your job, etc. - invest in a good back up battery. Next to your phone charger, it is the most important accessory you could have.

Particularly when you're talking about using a smart phone that does a lot more than make a call. Web browsing, videotaping, watching videos and TV shows on your phone drains power fast.

I have been using a Mophie Juice Pack Air rechargeable battery with built-in case for my iPhone. At about $80, it's more expensive than most battery packs, but that's because it comes with a very hard shell case that completely protects the phone. At it doubles the battery life of the iPhone, providing a whopping 270 hours of standby time and up to 4.5 hours talk time.

Another choice is the RichardSolo Smart Backup Battery at about $50. You just pull it out when you need it by snapping it onto the bottom of the iPhone, iPod Touch or other iPod devices. Easily fitting in your pocket, the battery also doubles the battery life of the iPhone.

Important features to look for when shopping for a back-up battery:

Charging: Most back up batteries charge via a wall outlet. Bonus if USB works too. Another must-have is simultaneous charging; plug it into the wall and charge backup battery and mobile phone at same time.

Size matters: The smaller the charger, the better for convenience sake. But make sure the small size doesn't compromise battery life. Look for a battery that gives you at least several hours extra juice.

Lithium polymer is the gold standard: These batteries last a long, long time and develop no memory issues.

On/Off switch capability: It's best if your backup battery gives the option of using it's power or china mobile phone power by a flick of switch. That way you can choose when to drain the back-up battery or not.

Be kind to your cell. Keep your mobile phone alive longer by using a case, keeping it clean and dry and following overnight charging instruction. Never start the day with a low battery charge.

Because never know when you need extra power - until of course you need it.
