Mobile phone driving is a real road hazard

Yesterday I had a brush with death, and it really got me thinking. You see, it was senseless, careless actions by two total strangers that nearly ended my life. And it should never have happened, wouldn't have happened, if we would all wake up and demand something be done about people who use their mobile phones while driving.

I was on my way home from work, headed north on Memorial Drive. It's a narrow two-lane road with lots of blind curves and several small hills that obstruct vision.

Consequently, there are long stretches where the lanes are separated by a double yellow line. The road also has no shoulders and multiple mailboxes right at the edge of the pavement.

I was only going 40 because a tiny compact car in front of me was going even slower. But a guy behind me in a muscle sports car had no patience. He was racing his engine and driving with one hand while talking on his mobile phone. I'm sure he thought I was the slow one and didn't even realize there was another car ahead of me.

For a couple of miles he tailgated me so closely I was afraid he would rear end my car. Finally, he reached the end of his patience and roared out around me, despite the double yellow line and small hill ahead that made it impossible to see.

As he crested the hill, still in the left lane, another car came over the hill from the other way headed straight for him. He tried to dart over in front of me, but that's when he saw the little car ahead of mine. He had no choice but to gun it, and barely made it around the two of us as the oncoming car swerved to miss him.

But that was only the beginning. You see, that oncoming car was being followed closely by another. And the driver of that second car was looking down, not at the road. He appeared to be texting on his mobile phone. He wandered across the double yellow line into my lane and straight toward me. I laid on the horn, swerved off the road onto the grass, and nearly took out a couple of mailboxes.

That's when the oncoming driver finally looked up, saw where he was, and quickly jerked his car back into his own lane, narrowly missing the car behind me.

Two near misses in a matter of seconds, both caused by drivers using mobile phones. I was ticked!

I have a mobile phone, too, and many are the times I have had it ring while I'm driving, or remembered while driving that I urgently needed to call someone.

I do my best to resist those urges; it's just too dangerous. I don't want to die that way, and I certainly could not live with the guilt if I caused someone else's death because I was paying more attention to my phone than to the traffic.

When is someone going to introduce legislation to outlaw using mobile phones while driving? It seems like a no-brainer. We have definitive research proving that drivers who are on the phone cause more accidents.

Even hands-free phones make no difference because it's not what your hands are doing that causes the distraction. It's what your mind is doing – concentrating on your conversation, not your driving.

So next time you're tempted to grab the phone while driving, I hope you'll think twice and wait till you stop. And if anyone ever introduces the idea of outlawing mobile phone use while driving – get behind it.

If you don't, you could find yourself directly in the path of it – "it" being a distracted, cell phoning driver.

Most users think cell phones are too complicated

You can keep your iPhone, your Pre, and your newfangled Nokia, say cell phone users: Cellular handsets have simply gotten too complicated, according a survey undertaken by British mobile phone recycling company FoneBank.

FoneBank polled UK users about their phone habits and found that the vast majority -- 61 percent -- felt that their phone had "too many unnecessary features compared to ten years ago." As an example of this, 45 percent said that they didn't even use their MP3 player (in large part, I imagine, because they didn't know how). 30 percent said they didn't care about their phone's camera.

To be sure, the latest smart phones get all the press, but old-fashioned "dumb" phones remain some of the most popular handsets available. When asked what their favorite China mobile phone of the past 10 years has been, the winner was the venerable Motorola RAZR, prized for its portability and, apparently, its lack of extraneous features. A full 39 percent of phone buyers said they chose what phone to buy based not on what it could do for them but on how simple it was.

Consumers everywhere remain devoted to simple cell phones. While the iPhone remains the top selling handset, Motorola's RAZR is still the #2 phone in the U.S., based on the most recently available figures from NPD (Q3 200 . While it's the only extremely simple phone in the top five, it certainly isn't alone on the market: At the time of that study, only 30 percent of phones sold had a QWERTY keyboard available.

And simplicity is the primary selling point for a small but important part of the cell phone market, with handsets like the Jitterbug offering a bare minimum of features -- no cameras, no streaming videos -- and affordable calling plans.

What about you? Is it more important to be able to browse YouTube while you're on the bus... or be able to figure out how to make a phone call?

T-Mobile Announces Second Android Phone

T-Mobile announced the company's second Android phone, the MyTouch 3G, on Monday, based on the HTC Magic platform. Based on the Google Ion/HTC Magic platform, the MyTouch 3G is a touch-screen, slab-style smart phone with improved multimedia features, Microsoft Exchange support, and some applications that will be exclusive to T-Mobile.

"This is our next Android google phone. It continues our leadership with Android and the partnership that we've established with Google," T-Mobile CTO Cole Brodman said.

The MyTouch 3G will come in black, white and red. It has no physical keyboard, relying instead on the Android 1.5 OS's virtual keyboard for entering data. It features a 3.2", 320x480 touch screen, 3.2-megapixal camera, MicroSD memory card slot, and built-in video recording and playback capabilities. The phone connects to the Internet via T-Mobile's 2G and 3G networks, foreign 2G or 3G networks or Wi-Fi.

T-Mobile's pitch for the MyTouch 3G centers around the phone's customizability, focusing on features like the phone's wide range of available home screen widgets. While the phone will have access to the 5,000 applications in the current Android Market app store, Brodman said T-Mobile will offer some exclusive apps as well. One of them is Sherpa, a local search and recommendation engine that improves its recommendations based on a user's past history of requests.

T-Mobile's close relationship with Google also let them put Microsoft Exchange support into the phone while keeping the "with Google" moniker that signifies full Google approval of the device, Brodman said.

The Google Android OS was supposed to appear on a wide range of phones, but so far only one has appeared in the US, the T-Mobile G1. Brodman said that T-Mobile will have "multiple Android devices shipping in the second half [of this year]." The MyTouch 3G won't kick the G1 out of T-Mobile's product line, either. The two phones will coexist, Brodman said.

Sprint and Verizon have also shown interest in launching Android phones, and AT&T has spoken about releasing highly customized Android phones in the future.

The MyTouch will also be sold with an unusual 2-year extended warranty, which will be available at T-Mobile stores for what Brodman said is a "nominal" additional fee. He didn't give exact details, but he made it sound more affordable than the usual phone insurance.

The gadget will also come with a protective case, travel charger, and headphone adapter to let owners use standard 3.5-mm headphones with the device, Brodman said. The built-in 4GB MicroSD card will come with six songs from Sony Music on board.

The MyTouch 3G can be pre-ordered by existing T-Mobile customers starting July 8th for $199.99. Shipments will go out to pre-ordering customers on July 29th, and other folks will be able to get the phone in early August. If you're curious about the MyTouch 3G, check out our hands-on with the generic version of the phone, known as the Google Ion.

China HiPhone F06-Slim Wi-Fi TV Phone

Now this is a cloned handset that you don't see every day - the HiPhone F06-Slim Wi-Fi TV mobile phone. What makes this model stand out is the fact that it resembles the BlackBerry Storm, which is something different from the many iPhone clones hailing from China these days. In addition, it also comes with TV support for on-the-go entertainment alongside Wi-Fi connectivity for greater functionality.

Other features of the HiPhone F06-Slim Wi-Fi TV Mobile Phone include a 3.2" touchscreen display, dual SIM slots for busy people and a quad-band GSM handset. Hard to believe the entire thing costs a mere $190, unlocked, but then again don't expect the user interface and operating system to be on par with a "real" phone.

Questions to ask yourself before getting your kids a cell phone

How do you decide if your kids should own their own cell phones?

It seems in the past, the problem with kids owning cell phones was just a matter of racking up too many minutes talking to their friends.

High phone bills are no longer as much of an issue since most family plans include unlimited texting and minutes. As a result, more parents are giving in to persistent pleading for cell phones.

But cell phones also come with many more bells and whistles these days, giving parents more to consider.

Here are some questions to ask yourself before you go sign up for that family plan:
How will you pay for their phone service? Sure, special offers make purchasing additional phones easier. A family plan may not seem that much more expensive than what you're currently paying, but what about the extras? Are you willing to pay for unlimited texting or unlimited email or internet access? Are you going to make them pay for the additional charges through extra chores or allowance? If you prefer they pay for their own service, consider a pre-paid phone like Tracfone.

Do you want your kids to have internet access on their phones? If the answer is no, the child may not even want the phone. Kids want cell phones for all their cool features. If you don't want them texting or getting online, it may not be worth the extra monthly fee.

Are you prepared for your kids to text anyone, not just you or their friends? It may seem handy to be able to text your kids while they're at a friend's house, but who else are they texting? Kids pass phone numbers of their friends to each other. Maybe just to say hi initially, or find out who likes who, but before you know it, your daughter is texting another girl's boyfriend on a regular basis. Someone you never met before. And, yes, they will have boyfriends and girlfriends before you know it.

Are you prepared for unsupervised conversations? Some parents read their kids' text messages. Others would consider it an invasion of privacy. Even if you agree in advance with your child that all messages should be monitored, how can you know if they're deleting messages they might not want you to see? Once you allow texting, it opens up windows for conversations which you have no control over.

Do you know if your kids have a social networking page? In addition to the games and music features on cell phones, which seem innocent enough, Facebook is a readily available program on most phones. Many kids have their own Facebook and Myspace pages, with or without parental knowledge. You may have parental controls on your home computer, but how will you know what sites your child will visit on his/her phone?

Do you want your kids sending pictures on their phones? So the stars of High School Musical sent nude photos of each other to their phones, your kids would never do that! Perhaps not, but what are they taking pictures of? Do you want them texting any pictures of themselves or their friends to each other?

Cell phones aren't going anywhere. So whether you rebel against or embrace cell phones for your kids, be aware of what kids are doing and who they're talking to with their phones.

Agree on some ground rules before you get the phone, and don't hesitate to take the phone away if your child violates any of those rules. Having a cell phone, or any of today's technology, is a privilege, not a right. It's your job to know what your kids are doing and saying with that technology.
