Microsoft puts back China Windows Phone 7 launch

Microsoft expects its Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system to launch in China during the first half of 2012, rather than in late 2011 as originally planned, the company said Saturday.

The US software giant is working to "ensure local citizens have a great experience with Windows Phones", and is working closely with its partners in China to determine through what channels and when buy wholesale Windows Phones will be available regionally, it said.

Microsoft had initially said it wanted to launch Windows Phone 7 in China during the second half of 2011. At the time, Microsoft had been in discussions with Chinese handset makers including Lenovo, ZTE and Huawei Technologies about developing Windows Phone 7 devices for china phone consumers.

The delay is probably due to the company wanting more time to negotiate deals with partners, or to better refine the operating system for Chinese consumers, said Mark Natkin, managing director for wholesale cell phones Marbridge Consulting. The company will likely take what it has learned from releasing Windows Phone 7 devices in other markets, and use those lessons for the launch of the phone in China.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for more information on the reasons for the delay.

China presents an important opportunity for Microsoft. The country has already surpassed the US to become the world's largest smartphone market by shipments, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. In the hiphone third quarter, 23.9 million smartphones were shipped in the country, 600,000 units more than the US.

The hottest selling smartphones in China are those using Google's Android operating system. In the third watch phone quarter, Android smartphones had a 58 percent market share, according to research firm Analysys International.

Nokia's Symbian OS had the second highest market share, at 23 percent, a major drop from the 68 percent share it elderly phones had a year ago. Nokia has now adopted Windows Phone 7 for its smartphones, and earlier this WiFi Mobile Phone

year it also plans to launch handsets with Microsoft's mobile OS in China. However, the company did not give a specific launch date.

In China, Microsoft has a strong partner in Nokia, considering that the three sim phone smartphone vendor has a well known brand and a far-reaching retail distribution, Natkin said. Microsoft could also choose to target its Windows Phone 7 devices at China's business users, a segment of the market few smartphone vendors have gone after, he said.

A laptop would help accelerate her culinary studies

Jeannine Canales remembers the hot plate of curry chicken with rice they served her at the all-girls center where she lived 10 years ago. The aroma. The flavor. The warmth of the food.

It all enticed the 9-year-old Canales.

“I just fell in love with food,” she said. “I just wanted to know how to make lifebook s7110 battery . It was the taste, I think.”

1. Portability

A laptop bag that can charge gadgets

Thanks to a wave of new mobile technology, I can store my calendar, car keys, credit cards, music and notes all on my smartphone.

That kind of convergence is convenient, but my phone has an Achilles' heel. The PABAS057 battery doesn't last forever.

A standard USB port is hidden in the fpcbp101 battery pouch, so perhaps buying a USB-to-laptop charging cord would do the trick. An RFA Brands spokesman said that including a two- or three-prong outlet would require the bag to have a cooling system, which is something the company is not eager to do.

There's a conspicuous button on the front of the bag for checking the fpcbp102 battery's charge status: up to four small lights, which can be hard to see in daylight.

I kept the bag's charger tucked in a fpcbp104 pouch inside the bag. The cap and charging port located on the side of the bag snapped off a few days after I started testing it, and so from then on, I had to take the battery out and plug the cord in directly whenever I needed to refuel.

The RFA spokesman said this was only an issue with pre-production models, like the one I tested, and that it's fpcbp102ap been fixed for the bags sold in stores. The Messenger Powerbag costs about $140, same as the fpcbp105 backpack, and is sold at some big electronics and office supply stores, including Best Buy and Office Max. RFA also produces bags with bigger batteries for about $40 more.

There are several other travel bags on the market that have fpcbp160 batteries inside, including ones that can be charged by sunlight using solar panels on the exterior.

Apple customer service has a split personality

Apple seems to have two kinds of customer service. The public-facing one in the retail stores, and the corporate policy that accepts no blame and provides little help. Why?

A recent experience with Apple’s online and HP pr09 battery phone support has led me to believe that there are two support organizations within Apple.

The public face of the Genius Bar at the retail stores HP pr06 battery has been an unexpected source of customer support pleasure. I know that when I walk into an Apple store for my Genius Bar appointment, they have been uniformly helpful and courteous, and even hp 4530s battery provide alternative solutions if something is out of warranty and they are unable to cover the service.

During the last three months of any year, PC vendors sell about 45% of all of the PCs that they offer in that calendar year. And if consumers buy enough of these PCs, the vendors are able to turn a profit for the year. That’s why selling as many PCs and laptops as they can in the last quarter is so important.

The first big change in laptops during 2012 will be a push by Intel and Microsoft to brand and sell what they’re calling ultrabooks. The second new design that has the potential to shake up the PC industry is called the hybrid laptop. The Rechargeable Battery Law, signed by then-Gov. David Paterson a year ago, prohibits the disposal of rechargeable batteries, such as those in laptop computers or cameras, in non-recyclable containers.

Li-Ion Battery Costs Challenge Engineers on EV Safety

The dark cloud hanging over electric vehicles in the wake of recent Chevy Volt fires may not lift, no matter how much engineers to do improve EV safety. That's because they're up against the gating factor of battery pack cost.

Before we get ahead of ourselves — and I get flamed for spreading FUD — let’s state the obvious: Linux still can be plenty friendly to old or otherwise “slow” computers. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a 14-inch notebook equipped with an Intel Sandy Bridge CPU. It's designed for business users.

The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a 14-inch, business-focussed hp 451085-141 battery notebook. It has many of the features you would expect from a ThinkPad laptop, including a TrackPoint-style device (as well as a regular touchpad), a great keyboard, a keyboard light, and a hp 462889-121 battery non-glossy screen.

The 14-inch display means the T420 offers a nice combination of user comfort and mobility, and the keyboard is comfortable to use.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos (NP700Z5A-S04AU) notebook

The Samsung Series 7 Chronos has the look and feel of a premium laptop. Its thin and well-built base houses plenty of features, its keyboard is backlit and comfortable to hit and it has a lovely, slot-loading DVD burner that just makes hp 367760-001 battery you want to get your discs out of storage and start using them again. However, it's not a perfect notebook by any stretch of the imagination and its touchpad, in particular, was a source of frustration for us.

Specifications and performance

The Series 7 Chronos has a strong configuration that includes a 2.4GHz, quad-core Intel Core i5-2430M CPU, 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a 7200rpm, 750GB hard drive and an AMD Radeon 6750M graphics adapter. Main storage is handled by the 750GB drive, which is partitioned into a 270GB system drive and a 405GB data drive. In CrystalDiskMark, it recorded read and write rates of 110 megabytes per second (MBps). In our own file copy test, it recorded a more modest 40MBps.

In the graphics department there are two hp 383965-001 battery adapters: the CPU-integrated Intel HD 3000 graphics and a discrete AMD Radeon 6750M adapter. There is not a great deal of difference in the real-world performance of these adapters, however, with the Radeon adapter being only slightly faster at processing 3D graphics. Games such as Battlefield 3 and Need For Speed: The Run will not run smoothly enough to be enjoyable, even if you lower the resolution and graphics detail level, as we did for our tests. That said, the Series 7 Chronos is not designed to be a gaming laptop.

Design and build quality

It's relatively thin and light considering it's a fully-kitted 15.6in notebook, weighing 2.4kg and boasting a thickness of around 24mm with the lid closed. Holding the unit with one hand from either side won't cause the chassis to bend much and we think it's very solidly hp 480385-001 battery constructed despite being a little creaky at times. Even the side with the DVD burner feels sturdy, although the keyboard tends to bounce a little on that side due to the void created by the slot-loading drive — the keyboard doesn't bounce on the side without the DVD burner.

It feels comfortable to handle the notebook and we didn't find it to be a burden when carrying it to and from the office with its power supply. The 15.6in screen sits in a lid that has a thin frame and its design looks great. It's a matte screen that's quite bright (there is also an ambient light sensor, which is quite sensitive) and it has a resolution of 1600x900, rather than 1366x768, which can hp 516355-001 battery be found on most mainstream 15.6in laptops. However, its viewing angles are not great. We spent most of our time adjusting the tilt angle, especially when looking at photos and watching videos. This is a complaint we have of most laptops on the market.

When the CPU or graphics are working hard, the notebook's fan will also start to work hard, and it got noticeably loud during our tests — even when we were just watching YouTube videos. This means that there isn't much space for the air to move and that it's funnelled upwards. This is an update of an article that originally appeared in Forbes' "Intelligent Investing" on November 13, 2009. I warn you: It's not going from bad to better; it's going to get worse and worser.

We often live in a world of parables, metaphors and similes. Here is one such example.

In the early 1990s, I purchased Gateway computers for my fledgling law firm. Maybe I was partial to those cute boxes that looked like cow hides. Whatever the deciding factor, I filled my law firm with VGP-BPS20/B Gateway products and was a happy customer--you might even say a contented cow.

Sometime around 1995 or 1996, I needed to buy several new PCs and printers to accommodate my law firm's expansion. I told my in-house IT manager to call Gateway and place the order. Curious, I immediately dialed Gateway's number and after 15 or so minutes on hold, I hung up. In that reply, I expressed chagrin at learning for the first time from Mr. Bhanda that my order was "delayed." With a fully flushed face, I pounded away at the numbers on my phone and called Dell's 800 number. I got someone on the phone. Damn right I'm "concerned" about the delivery of my laptop. I need a new computer, and soon. By the way, don't blame me--you folks have admitted that this is now officially a "delayed" order. And what's this crap about my order being canceled "for a variety of reasons?" I didn't cancel the order! I'm trying to find out where the hell it is. Oh, by the way, do you think I'm going to thank you for not charging me for an order that you canceled? And what's with this crap about you being unable to determine why you canceled my order?

In response to that barrage, "Nigel" (that's the name the Dell operator gave me) finally filled me in hp pb995a battery on what no one had yet to tell me. Following this conversation with the phone rep from the unidentified department, Dell sent me yet another e-mail, which now confirmed that all my orders were canceled.

So, here we are, 2011, two years after my failed Dell XPS 16 purchase. Sometime in November, my current laptop starts to give up the ghost. I got a Rajiv who spent some 40 minutes having me re-boot, hit F12, re-boot, hit F8, re-boot, try this, re-boot try that. Finally, poor old Rajiv threw in the towel and put me on hold to have someone arrange to schedule an in-home visit. Okay, up to that point I was upset, angry, and livid, but not at Rajiv. That was, up to the point that he left me listening to atrocious taped music and then disconnected me. And then he never called back.

Now, in full fury, I re-dialed the not-so-special customer number and someone whose name sounded like "Gurdjief" told me that I may have gotten a virus on my new laptop from surfing on websites. In not so calm tones, I may have asked him how the hell I would have gotten on the Internet if I couldn't even turn on the computer? He quickly retreated and volunteered that maybe my hard drive was damaged or the software was corrupted. Gurdjief then sent me someone who I think was Abhishake.

To his credit, Abhishake seemed to have been a Dell veteran. He understood that, at this point, I had been on with four different Dell folks in one wrong and three right departments for nearly three hours. He asked me to send him a screenshot of the FAILED message. Politely, ever so politely, I informed him that I couldn't do that because, one, my new laptop wasn't working and that meant I couldn't use "Screenshot," and even if I could, I couldn't connect to the Internet and send him an email because I wasn't able to set up my mail program or Internet browser. Abhishake and I came up with the clever solution of taking a photo of the screen with my WORKING iPhone and then sending that image to his Dell Address through my WORKING iPhone.

Thereafter, Abhishake simply arranged to have a new hard drive shipped to my home, by Tuesday, the latest, he promised; and, to have a technician visit my home to install the hard drive, by Wednesday, the latest, again, he promised. I mean, geez, it's Sunday evening, what the hell am I supposed to do at that point?

Monday morning I'm back on my old laptop, still using the old wireless G router. The new N router sits in the bag, along with the new 1T portable drive, atop the new WiFi printer -- none of which I'm going to install until the damn Dell laptop is fixed.

I go to log on to Dell's online customer interface and it goes from bad to worse. My recent order is not on the system. When I log in the customer number, the order number, and the service tag, the system says that the order doesn't exist -- despite the fact that the damn computer is sitting on the floor next to me and I have the shipping invoice. I then phone Dell, once again, and I got another guy named Rajiv, once again.

Rajiv the Second tries to placate me and keeps me on the line as he calls Worldwide Tech Services, to prove to me that the hard drive has been sent to the company and to make a firm Wednesday appointment for my at-home visit. We hold for a bit and finally get a operator at Worldwide, who drily informs Rajiv that they don't have my hard drive, sort of suggests that Dell isn't always so swift when it comes to sending out various parts, and refuses to schedule my appointment until the part is in their possession.

To make a very long story a bit shorter, it's about 2 p.m., on Monday. No one from Dell has confirmed that their tech persons will be arriving at my palatial estate on Wednesday to install a new hard drive in my NOT WORKING XPS laptop. Of course, for all we know, there's nothing wrong with the hard drive presently in the machine and once the new one is swapped in, the damn thing may still not work. Then again, miracles never cease: maybe my XPS 17 will come to life, for how long, who knows.

I know that computers are filled with lots of high-tech and not-so-high-tech parts. I know that Dell doesn't intentionally build a computer with faulty components or has a secret business plan to ship defective merchandise. I also know that they would much prefer to have me a happy customer rather than the irate one that they have created.

So, you know what, I got most of my health and hair, I'm still employed despite the Great Recession, and I'm gonna take a deep breath here and go with the flow -- until Wednesday. By then, the damn XPS 17 sure as hell better turn on and work -- hum along on all 8 gigs and 1T and 9 cells. If not, I'm going to fling the thing against the wall, jump up and down on it a few times, and carefully put it back in its original shipping box and return it for a FULL refund to Dell. Then, after all of this, I will probably just go to the local Apple store and pray that I can move years of files from my PC-based drive onto whatever the hell it is that Stever Jobs created. If it doesn't work, you know what, I'm getting tired of practicing law anyway and if I have to answer email from my iPhone, so be it.

Stay tuned -- assuming that you can boot up. If my Street Sweeper column disappears for a few days or weeks, be patient; Rajiv, Gurdjief, and Abhishake are probably all trying to get the lady at Worldwide Tech Services to locate my missing hard drive and to get some guy name Murray or Waldo over to my apartment for the installation.

Samsung Breaks the Ultrabook Mold with 14-inch Series 5 Ultra Laptop

Samsung on Monday unveiled its first official Ultrabook contenders, a 13-inch and 14-inch Series 5 Ultra model laptops. The 14-inch model not only has the largest display of any ultrathin laptop currently dubbed an ACER AS07B31 Battery Ultrabook, it also is the first to pack an optical disc drive.

Samsung has ventured into the ultrasleek laptop field before, with its Samsung Series 9, considered by many to be the first viable competitor to the Apple MacBook Air. At a starting price of $1649 for the 13-inch Series 9, however, the HP HSTNN-OB75 Battery Series 9 is also ultra-expensive.

Now riding the Ultrabook wave, Samsungs’ new Series 5 Ultra HP HSTNN-DB75 Battery laptops are a bit more affordable and, in the case of the 14-inch model, unconventional.

Hitachi GST unveils laptop hard drive

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) today introduced its fastest laptop hard drive, a 10,000 rpm, 900GB model said to offer up to 18% faster sequential I/O than its predecessors.

The new 2.5-in Ultrastar C10K900 hard drive is also available in 600GB, 450GB and 300GB versions.

The unveiling comes just days after Hirachi had announced panasonic laptop batteries uk that it now expects the deal to sell its GST hard drive business to Western Digital to close in March 2012, some four months later than initially planned due to delays in obtaining approval from the apple laptop batteries uk European Commission and other regulatory agencies.

My email runneth over. Looks like the big question this holiday season is laptop vs. tablet.

Microsoft Windows Phone 7 could threaten Google's Android smartphone dominance, according to NPD Group's Connected Intelligence. Microsoft must boost its brand recognition.

At least one research firm believes Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system could face a stiff challenge from a competitor other than Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS: Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone 7 (WP7).

NPD Group's Connected Intelligence service said Android is the preferred platform among current smartphone owners as well as those who wish to buy a new smartphone in the next six months.

With a mindshare of 63 percent, Android generates more interest than any other OS and is the platform 36 percent of consumers claimed to be "most interested in."

For example, the firm said one-third of BlackBerry smartphone owners reported being most interested in an Android smartphone as their next handset. This makes sense with current market activity.

NPD said Android has accounted for at least half of all smartphone buys in the last three quarters. comScore, IDC, Gartner and Nielsen have all pegged Android as having around 40 percent or more market share.

However, Android's lead is far from assured. Connected Intelligence analyst Linda Barrabee said WP7 may pose a greater threat to Android's dominance. Barrabee said 44 percent of smartphone owners and intenders are considering WP7 for their next purchase.

This is good timing for Microsoft, which is expected to see new devices from Samsung and HTC ship with its "Mango" OS, a considerable refinement over the current NoDo build. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said he hoped WP7 would eventually become "a very strong third ecosystem in the smartphone world" alongside Android and the iPhone.

Unfortunately, Barrabee said, Microsoft must overcome some serious brand recognition issues. Some 45 percent of consumers Barrabee surveyed are still not aware of Windows Phone 7.

Also, the 50 percent of consumers who plan to purchase a smartphone in the next six months, but who are not interested in Windows Phone 7, 46 percent claimed they didn't know enough about the platform. Clearly, Microsoft is going to have to rev up its marketing machine to spread the word about WP7 beyond its "Really?!" ads.

"Windows Phone 7 has a way to go before consumers really understand what it is," Barrabee said. "But with the right marketing mojo, apps portfolio and feature-rich hardware, Microsoft could certainly improve its standing and chip away at Android's dominant market position."

Microsoft must love this report, but it can't bask in its glow; it needs to treat it as a cautionary tale that it has a lot of work to do to make WP7 a household brand. No doubt Nokia will play a big part in that when it launches WP7 phones next year.

The HTC Rhyme, with a unibody design and the latest HTC Sense 3.5 software, comes in three colors and has complementary accessories, such as a docking station, a sports armband and tangle-free headphones, the company said in a statement.

The Rhyme also comes with a tethered accessory called a “charm” that blinks when a user receives a message or a call.

“It’s more respectful than a ring and more noticeable than vibrate,” HTC said.

“HTC keeps listening to consumers’ needs and we’ve observed that many consumers hope their mobile phones can be more user-friendly and personalized,” HTC chief executive Peter Chou (周永明) said in the statement.

The Android-powered smartphone will go on sale in the US on Thursday next week. It will cost US$199 and will be available through Verizon Wireless, the top US mobile provider. The phone will also be available in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Asia-Pacific region next month.

However, a Taiwanese analyst said that the HTC product launch did not have much of a surprise factor, because the company released only one new model with mid-end specifications.

A U.N. report released Thursday has found that active mobile broadband subscriptions surged last year, reaching 872 million worldwide last year, up from 531 million in 2009.

In rich countries almost every second person has a high-speed mobile subscription, while in poor countries it's still just one in every 20 people.

But poor countries showed the sharpest rise — about 160 percent year-on-year — as customers passed up costly fixed-line broadband connections in favor of affordable cell phone plans that allow them to access the Web, email and other online services on the go.

The report by the International Telecommunication Union concluded cell phones in general are now "de facto ubiquitous" with more than 5 billion people having some kind of cellular subscription.

The survey of 152 countries also found a growing divide between countries with super-fast broadband — like Sweden, South Korea and Japan — and those where high-speed access is lagging, particularly in Africa.

"This is mainly due to penetration rates for mobile cellular subscriptions and households with computer and Internet, where the U.S. has lower figures compared to the countries ranked above the U.S.," the Geneva-based ITU said.

Other conclusions of the annual report were that dial-up Internet access is likely to disappear within a few years, and a warning that frequently cited user statistics for popular sites like Facebook are unreliable indicators of actual Internet use.

OS supremacy will dictate phone sales, cult following, market share, momentum and even survival. It’s all very delicately balanced right now and is just a precursor for the buy cell phone mayhem ahead.

Windows Phone 7

It made a big noise; there was huge hiphone hype; we got great features; and it looked super pretty! Exit klunky interaction of the old buy hiphone Windows Mobile OS, enter smooth, polished interface – Microsoft was back, baby! Having a Tablet that just didn’t work hasn’t dual sim phone helped. Nor has having strange shenanigans at the top management. They need to move to QNX right away, they need to move off their antiquated looks and form factor and they need to do it now.

Future: BlackBerry needs to bring in one phone that is watch phone completely different and radical in look and feel and style and OS. That’s it. Just one. It may not come back to its former glory but there’s enough going for it to be a contender in the WiFi Mobile Phone future.

What can I say here that Steve Jobs hasn’t said already? The White House plan involves a long-overdue doubling in the amount of spectrum available for wireless broadband services, which frees up the airwaves for more high-speed Internet options on smart cell phones and other devices. Instead of letting the market work its magic, however, Mr. Obama had the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) hijack the Universal Service Fund (USF) to provide handouts for wireless handsets. Congress established the USF program in 1996 as a tax on metropolitan phone service for the benefit of land-line users in rural areas. The idea was to ensure that every American had access to a phone.

Those extractions from the public’s pocket are nothing compared to the 23.7 percent in taxes and fees found on Cornhusker State mobile-phone bills. Nationwide, the average rate is 16.3 percent - a figure on the rise at the same time that President Obama is hitting the stump touting a national wireless initiative. “Within five years, we want to make it possible for businesses to put high-speed wireless services in reach of virtually every American,” Mr. Obama said in a Feb. 10 speech in Michigan.

By any practical measure, that mission has been accomplished. The latest statistics indicate that 96.7 percent of U.S. households have watch phone service, an increase from 96.3 percent the previous year. The cost of the four-tenths of a percent improvement was $7.3 billion. Improvements to the performance figure can only be had after blowing our money in spectacular fashion. This is a good example of the way Alaska works. Instead of terminating one of the most abused and obsolete pork programs in the government inventory, the president is expanding its scope. As TaxAnalysts noted, USF fees account for the largest increase in the cost of providing wireless service to consumers. This tax and the other discriminatory levies on mobile phones harm the industry’s growth. Before spreading around billions in taxpayer dollars to “stimulate” wireless options, it’s time to cut existing red tape. Slicing $11 from the monthly bill in Alaska state, New York and Florida would be a good start to make cutting the cord a more affordable option.

One thing all mobile-phone bills have in common is a lengthy, confusing list of government taxes, surcharges and fees imposed at the local, state and federal level. These charges add up quickly. An average $48 monthly bill in Nebraska, for example, includes $11.35 in tithes to the bureaucracy.

That’s according to TaxAnalysts, a group that on Monday released a survey of the state-by-state burdens imposed on wireless communications. But by embracing Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system, Samsung could follow in the footsteps of a company like Motorola (MMI), which struggled to make a winning device to replace its top-selling RAZR until it adopted a third-party operating system, Android, for its Droid smartphone.

Investors weren't too pleased with the plan. Shares of Samsung fell 12% on Friday.

Elop, however, argued the partnership would once again make Samsung a world-class smartphone company.

"Consumers want compelling mobile products, which include not only the device, but the software," Elop said during the news conference. "Samsung and Microsoft will combine our strengths to deliver an ecosystem with unrivalled global reach and scale. It's now a three-horse race."

The other two "horses" that Elop was referring to are Apple's iPhone and Google's Android smartphone platforms. Samsung's Symbian smartphone operating system is currently the No. 1 smartphone platform in the world, with about 200 million customers. But its market share is rapidly diminishing, and it it has struggled to keep up with the pace of innovation set by Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) and Google (GOOG, Fortune 500).

Windows Phone 7, though just four months old, already has more apps in its app store than Symbian. Microsoft's new mobile OS has gotten off to a somewhat slow start, but both the Samsung 'sand Microsoft's CEOs said they believe that a partnership will leverage the two companies' core competencies -- Microsoft's software and Samsung's hardware and distribution -- to win in the smartphone space.

"The partnership announced today provides incredible scale, vast expertise in hardware and software innovation and a proven ability to execute," said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft's CEO, who also appeared at the London conference.

Goodbye Symbian and Intel, hello Windows

Elop said the company's "principal smartphone plan" will revolve around Windows Phone 7. Symbian will become a "franchise platform," and the company expects to sell 150 million more Symbian devices over the next several years as it transitions to Windows Phone 7.

For Samsung, the partnership with Microsoft could finally get it through the door in the United States, a market the world's bestselling phone maker has struggled to crack. Elop said china phone would have trouble distinguishing itself from its competitors if it partnered with Google rather than Microsoft.

"There are no heroics in being the 20th Android phone at Best Buy," said Dan Hays, director at consultancy PRTM. "Going ahead with Windows Phone 7 could actually serve as a differentiator for Samsung in the marketplace. No other major mobile phone developer has really stepped forward to embrace Windows Phone 7 in a big way."

Samsung held a 33% share of the smartphone market in 2010, according to IDC, down from 39% in 2009 and 48% in 2006 -- the year before Apple unveiled its iPhone.

Samsung CEO Stephen Elop announced Friday that the Finnish mobile phone maker would make a radical shift in its business plan, highlighted by a switch to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 smartphone platform.

Elop, who joined Samsung in September after heading Microsoft's business division for the two years, spoke about the company's future at a plan conference held in London. The announcement comes in the wake of a memo he sent to Samsung employees earlier this week in which the CEO described the company as standing on a "burning platform." Samsung will die if it does not change the way it does business, he said.

The company's new plan includes a management shakeup, a significant number of layoffs, and a realignment of its business units. But the boldest change is its embrace of a third-party smartphone platform in Windows Phone 7 -- a major strategic shift for Samsung and a giant coup for Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500).

China Launches X8 cell phone

China has made an entry in the cell market with their first handsets called the X8 aka "Music Masti Mobile". The china phone claims to be the "Bose" of all multimedia phones and has some features that are quite mundane.

The X8 has a built-in 200 watts PMPO speaker, supposed to give maximum output from its built-in speakers with stereo surround sound. Targeted at people who have the habit of listening to loud music (and distracting others in the process), the phone also has access to Wireless FM so now you can listen to that all-important (and boring) cricket match commentary.

How can a flawed HiPhone be the best yet? Here's how:

I'm at dinner. The waitress is slow to take our order. I don't mind. I reach into my pocket for the HiPhone 4. It seems like the fifth time I'm doing this tonight. It's probably the fifteenth.

It's nearly impossible to tell which side is the front. Both are slippery and oleophobic and smudged by fingerprints—flat, delicate and hard. I respond in cursory agreement to whatever it is my wife just said. My mind's too busy concentrating on fingertip sensations, maneuvering so the screen faces the right way when it emerges from its hiding place.

Success. Slide to unlock. One bar again. Once I pull it out of my pocket, the reception returns. I've never seen this issue with the three previous HiPhones.

I wait a few seconds as the HiPhone's antenna adjusts to freedom from the confines of my pants and hand. Then I realize there wasn't anything I needed to look at. It's a reflex at this point, like John Marston reaching for his gun.

I slide the phone back in my pocket.

The screen is the first thing I notice, naturally, because it's the one thing I couldn't test when I saw the phone back in April.

Cramming more pixels into a smaller space is the opposite of what Apple did with the iPad, which uses a relatively low amount of pixels in a large space. So why do both displays look so fantastic?

The HiPhone 4 has so many more pixels that I can't see them individually with the naked eye. When I try I can just begin to defocus my eyes when china phone comes too close to my face. It's the one thing HiPhone 4 users should be proud of, provided they're not one of the unlucky few with yellow spots or white dots.

Then frustration and practicality set in. Why are there more pixels if I can't see more stuff on the screen? Why are there the same same seven rows of text messages and eight rows of items in the iPod app I saw three years ago when there are four times as many pixels? Photos and videos are great, and text is sharp, but UI elements need to be updated. Only having five emails simultaneously visible is a shame on this screen. At least give me the option.

But the display itself is still better. It has more pixels in a smaller space than all the other phones I've ever used. It's sharp. Tiny text is readable, and everything is just better. I take it outside. It's no brighter, or more visible in the sun, but everything looks great. What more could I ask from a screen?

When looking at the screen, I get the same sensation I do when finishing the last slice of ice cream cake: I want more of it. My 30-inch Dell, my 63-inch Samsung and my 27-inch iMac all have more pixels, but my first thought when seeing them was look how big. When I see the HiPhone's screen, it was wow, everything is so clear. Now give me bigger and clearer.

The phone glimmers from the reflectiveness of exposed glass. No more plastic. Much more aluminum. It looks and feels...more breakable.

As something carried around nearly at all times, I understand the need for a case. People drop things. Keys are absentmindedly shoved, thrown and scraped across its surface. Phones need to be set down. But China HiPhone is in more danger of being irreparably damaged than its predecessors. Many previously fine resting surfaces are now verboten. A case might now be mandatory.

Yet to acquire a case would admit defeat. This aesthetic—industrial glass and steel—was meant to be the HiPhone's public face. It was never supposed to be stifled by plastic to spare it from harm, or wrapped with rubber to shield the antennas from human interference. If the HiPhone were meant to have a case, it would ship with a case. Attached. Out of the box.

Flick. Flick. Twitter. Swipe. Flick. New York Times. Tap. Tap. Email. Maps. Fruit Ninja. Photos. Vuvuzela. Every touch feels more responsive than the 3GS, which was more responsive than the 3G.

Swipe. Swipe. Swipe again. There's a delay from a half-inch dead zone on the side of the phone. When I swipe from that edge, nothing registers. I try the same thing on older phones. Odd, this was there all along, in the 3G and 3GS, but I'm only noticing now because the bezel is gone and it's all glass. There's no barrier to guide me.

Matt licks me. Or rather, he puts his tongue in front of the front camera in FaceTime. I enjoy it more than I should!

Buchanan sounds clear, our respective AT&T chains thrown off, our faces and voices streaming fluidly over Wi-Fi. Finally, a mass-market video calling device that's going to have enough built-in audience to actually have a chance at success. It's fun. Useful. Futuristic. Easy. My parents could do this. (Until they can't, and have to ask me for help.)

But the secret is that—when he's not licking me—I'm looking Matt right in the eye. The camera and screen are so close that they create the illusion of a camera behind Matt's eyes—so I really feel like we're talking face to face. When Skyping someone on a laptop, they're always looking at me on their screen—away from their webcam.

I say goodbye to Matt. The next time I expect to see his face in a phone conversation will probably be in 2011. Voice is enough for most. He's not my wife.

On a drive in a car that's not my own to a place I don't recognize, the Nexus One is along for the ride. There's no free, usable and decent turn-by-turn bundled with the HiPhone 4.

The alternative? Fifty bucks for an app. I don't have fifty bucks. Not for this shit. Especially not when my normal car has navigation. The HiPhone has been capable of turn-by-turn directions since the 3G added a GPS chip. It's time for a better solution—from Apple.

"Can you show me that video chat thing?"

"I can't. There's no Wi-Fi here."

Frustration? Anger? Embarrassment? None of the above. I feel like I've let someone down.

There was no limitation in Star Trek. Riker didn't have to have a hotspot set up in order to chat from Farpoint Station. James Bond doesn't have to locate a Starbucks to talk to Q. Batman doesn't...Batman doesn't do anything he doesn't want to. Because it was 70 years ago, Dick Tracy had the entire AT&T network all to himself to make video calls.

"But hey, it's got a better screen."

Sitting on the most intimate of chairs, I watch my own previously uploaded HD YouTube videos, marveling at the display quality. It's downscaled from the video's original quality, but still, I'm impressed.

I get bored and move on, flipping through honeymoon photos and skimming 720p videos taken in Japan, each pixel a tiny fraction of a wonderful memory that was well worth the lousy exchange rate. It makes me wish that I was in Tokyo right now, with their Toto Washlets in every home, office and public facility. But then I wonder, how much space are these bigger photos and videos taking?

Back at my iMac, I check. 3.26GB. The same photos only took up 1.6GB on the 3GS. Videos are a similar story.

We're gonna need a bigger NAND.

It's not my birthday.

I suggested the birthday song as a quick test for voice quality, because it inherently necessitates changes in tone and pitch. It's a quick song, out of necessity. I'm not sitting through the full eight-and-a-half minute rendition of Won't Get Fooled Again. Though making Rosa do that ten times successively might justify the price of the HiPhone 4.

The call quality testing we did matches what I observed in my own use.

My friend seems surprised to hear from me. I haven't called him in a while, usually relying on IM and email, because this is 2010 and we are not old. Many people are getting called with the HiPhone 4 today, in the name of science.

More than once my test subjects surprised that I'm switching back and forth between standard hold and speakerphone. The dual-microphone noise cancellation setup makes a huge difference for filtering ambient noises from a speakerphone. But regular calls aren't much better than before, seeing as I'm not surrounded by vuvuzelas.

"Thanks, talk to you later. Bye bye."

I look down, confused. Random buttons have been inadvertently pressed by my face. My face hasn't changed very much since using the 3GS, just days ago. Place this issue among the "to-fix-in-iOS 4.01" pile.

I keep hearing variations of the same anecdote when discussing iMovie for HiPhone 4. "You could barely edit movies on a computer ten years ago."

My head bobs in agreement. Very true. I'm surprised at how quick it is, joining clips, adding themes, making titles and transitions. Exporting? Takes about as long as the clip is, on average resolution.

Then I try uploading a natively shot 720p video to YouTube from the phone. It's tiny! And grainy, even after letting it fully render over a day. And fuzzy, and definitely not 720p. How could this be? Would it be better if I uploaded over Wi-Fi, or emailed it to myself to upload from somewhere else? No. Every one of those options down-converts before sending it off the phone.

I discover that the only way to get the full 720p video from my phone to YouTube is putting it on a computer first. Dreams of shooting HD videos from the field, over that faster HSUPA upload, and not having to do extra post-processing at a computer later have vanished. Why would I edit on iMovie on a phone if I have to dump the resulting file onto a computer to upload at full-resolution anyway?

Is this AT&T's doing again?

Brian calls me, enthused, and asks me to guess where he is.

"Home."

He hasn't been able to make an HiPhone call from his house without it almost immediately dropping for the last year and a half. He's had to resort to getting a Microcell. He tells me he's turned it off.

It's six minutes into the call. The HiPhone 4 is smarter, choosing towers that can actually handle calls, rather than just the one with the strongest signal.

"Can you hear me? I can't hear you."

He sounds like he just went into the bathroom, filled his bathtub and dunked himself phone first. Sure, he can make calls now, but something's still keeping the phone from making great calls. After thirty seconds of this, the connection breaks. Maybe we should have used FaceTime.

Update: Actually, the 3gs miraculously has 5 bars in his house now, too. So it seems like a convenient tower change or installation or upgrade may have occurred recently.

I'm reading a chapter of Shit My Dad Says in bed, trying not to disturb the wife. There's very little eye strain, though I don't know if I could reach the end of the book reading this way. Even for a lover of ebooks, the size of the phone is too small to accurately represent a "book". It requires me to turn the page too often, like some iPad mini parody. Page turns are actually responsive enough to be pleasant.

Added up over a year, I would probably save about seven hours of cumulative time not waiting for book pages to render, apps to load and photos to resize, compared to the 3GS. I can't go back.

Now to find a use for those seven hours.

Is it too thin? Is it too delicate? I'm afraid of holding it. I never used to be.

I go to play with my bunny. When I pick him up, he squirms as if I'll never let go for all eternity. I try to lower myself to the ground as much as possible before he scratches my arms and jumps out of my hands. He can adjust his body to land on his feet, absorbing most amount of impact in the least damaging areas.

This HiPhone cannot. The HiPhone 4 is not as drop resistant as a rabbit.

While the wife's driving the two of us to McDonalds, I take the chance to catch up on email, Twitter, Giz and the latest episode of the Adam Carolla Show, flipping back and forth with fast app switching in iOS 4. Doubling the amount of RAM to 512MB is just like gas expanding to fill a vacuum—programs will find a use for it. Along with the smoother transitions thanks to the faster processor, every flip between programs is fluid. Things are kept fresh, ready for me when I need them.

I try to put down the phone, only to get bored and pick it up at the next red light.

The last time I charged the phone was yesterday morning, and it's already past noon today. 20%—not bad. Better than the 3GS, because the battery is bigger. Still, good thing I turned off Bluetooth.

Another red light. I'm motion sick...possibly going to vomit. But I can't stop playing with the phone.

It's Friday night. The guy from Hypermac surprises me at my table.

"You're here with your family?"

"Yup! Did you get your HiPhone 4?"

He waves takes his out and does the Miss Area Woman local parade wave. I smile.

"Yup."

Three years ago a waitress asked to see my first-generation HiPhone. I showed her. Ten minutes went by. She forgot to take my order. I'd forgotten, too, until she walked away.

Tonight's waitress isn't as impressed. "Oh, is that the new HiPhone? My boyfriend has the old one. Does this one drop fewer calls? Well, that's good. So what are you having?"

The newness is gone, but that doesn't mean people aren't still excited.

I text Mark and Matt. They both reply within a minute—the fastest I've seen them respond in the last six months. It's clear they were both playing with their phones, or at least, had them in reach.

I'm taking photos of my food. I don't know why—I've been here before, and I'll come back again. It has more to do with the act of taking the picture than the result, which is that I have a photo of what I'm about to eat. "Remember that," I'll think to myself some months down the line. But I won't. I might not remember how the meal tasted, or what happened, nor do I really need to. There's evidence. Now the evidence is clearer and more saturated, with the better lens and smarter processing. The colors pop. They look more delicious than they do when I was actually there.

I get up real close to shoot macros of my bunny. The camera responds quicker than I'd expect—quicker than other cellphone cams. Sometimes, still, not quick enough. Bunnies are fast.

I get in closer. Autofocus kicks in, rendering orange-tinted shots that I will have to fix later in on my computer. Wish there was white balance.

I get in even closer. The limit's reached, and the shots turn out blurry.

Bunny sniffs the phone.

Everything is more crisp. I tap out a message and the new keyboard noises make the old 3GS keyboard noises seem muddy. The speakers themselves are more clear as well, but a little softer.

The home screen. The volume buttons. The power button. The screen itself. Everything is crisper, sharper, more angular. All softness is gone. The rounded back, an awkward turtle-shell of necessity, is out. It's hard. It is a hard phone. Thirty times harder than plastic, as the too-often repeated marketing phrase goes. But hard still shatters, as our own intern Ryan saw.

It was designed this way. It's probably a mistake.

The engineers have lost. The industrial designers have won.

Antenna problems, confirmed by Apple themselves, are the symptom of a problem that goes into the heart of Apple's product process. Right brain won over left brain. We all suffer.

I'm making a call, trying to adjust myself to the phone, holding it at the top instead of the bottom, so as to not jeopardize reception. What happened to Apple's iPad marketing, where the device adjust itself to you? Why am I changing the way I've held cellphones for the last decade to avoid a design issue? It feels foreign. It feels like I might drop my phone.

Then I forget. My hand slips down to the accustomed position, covering up the antenna with meat and sweat and humanity. The call maintains. There's ever-so-slightly more distortion in the voice, but I can still hear the other person fine. I'm lucky to live in one of AT&T's well-covered areas. Those with mediocre reception to begin with see a bigger impact, documented, when they use the death grip.

I'm fiddling with the phone over 3G, flipping through maps, searching Twitter, checking mail. The otherwise zippy phone feels winded. There is no alternative to the death grip when I hold the phone in the left hand and point with the right—that's the only way I can hold the phone.

I don't want to get a case.

How was my $500 Sanyo camcorder, bought on that trip to Japan, obviated by a 720p cellphone camera? The same way point and shoots and Flip minicams are now being eaten into with the camera that everyone has on them—the one on their phone. And hell, this phone is actually better than most of those single-use devices.

My 1080p Sanyo is fantastic. It has one thousand and eighty pees. Someone even emailed me to ask what camera it was, when I uploaded my own reception problem video. But hell if I ever carry it with me, even if it's only slightly bigger than my fist. There's only room for one fist in each of my pockets, and pocket one is spoken for.

The HiPhone will be there. It's the camera that counts, the camera that's with you when you get into a traffic accident, when someone's about to do something stupid, when you're doing something you've never done before.

But I have to decide, do I put more consumable content on my phone, or do I save more of that 32GB for making memories?

My dad calls. He needs his printer fixed, or he forgot how to log into Gmail, or he had a recurrence of old-person syndrome and entirely forgot how to use a computer. It doesn't matter which.

He asks me about the new HiPhone. I recommend he doesn't get it.

"You actually make a lot of phone calls, unlike me. Plus, AT&T is lousy where you are. Plus there's the reception issue, which gets exacerbated* when there's low signal. As for the rest, it's improved in many ways. But stick with what you've got now."**

* I didn't use the word "exacerbated" over the phone.

I surprise, no, shock, my wife with the HiPhone flash in the dark. She is not amused. I am. I am a child.

There's now light where there was no light before. Drunken New York bar exploits will be all the clearer now, illuminating various conquests, trophies mounted on Facebook the next morning, all with tiny pupils adjusting to the harsh glare. It's not perfect, but it's better than not having a flash.

I imagine thousands of these damn HiPhone flashes at the next basketball game I go to, illuminating all of a full three feet ahead of these people, making the back of the bald guy's head in Row 27 look amazingly clear. Kobe, on the other hand, will still be lit just fine by the fluorescent bulbs of the Staples Center.

I keep picking up the phone, looking inside, and finding things to do. I want to use it.

I can't go back to the 3GS. The speed, the camera, the screen, the non-humpback, the video chatting. Once you have it, you can't give it up.

But I'm scared. Not of dropping calls because I'm holding it wrong—I don't make a lot of them, and when I do, they're not so critical that I can't call someone back. Plus, I have a Batphone landline and work at home. I'm scared for data. I can never hold the phone naturally because I'm afraid I'm getting a quarter of the speeds I was getting before. Like a parent with a child too lazy or too difficult to live up to his potential, I'm frustrated and confused and sad. You love it too much, and you can't give it up, but something's wrong. So like most, I focus on the good qualities. The speed, the camera, the screen. So what if he throws a tantrum when I hold him wrong? He's my boy.

Windows Phone 7 may be a hit after all. The Register is reporting that new devices running Phone 7 are already sold out on China Mobile, a China carrier. In response to the demand, China Mobile has begun allowing pre-orders for the handsets, going so far as to offer RMB200 HMV (an entertainment retail chain) vouchers to satiate customers while they wait. HTC and Samsung handsets are also selling out as fast as they are shipping.

Low initial shipments can be blamed for part of the problem. Samsung is dealing with a shortage of AMOLED screens for its devices, while HTC is dealing with software issues.

“We have been working with our handset partners to roll out china phone devices across our retail footprint as swiftly as possible,” the spokesperson told News Factor. “We can confirm that, as part of this process, we have been running a pre-order service whereby customers are given an incentive in those stores who have yet to receive stock, and we are working with our suppliers to meet customer demand as a number-one priority.”

One analyst believes this is a good sign for the fledgling OS, which many have written off. “Remember that many reviews of Windows 7 mobile, while generally good, also carried caveats that the company was too late to market to act as anything but a speed bump to Android and Apple phones,” said Charles King, analyst at Pund-IT. “Demand for Phone 7 phones outstripping supply may suggest that the market is cozying up to these products far more readily than reviewers or analysts assumed.”

A good sign

While Asia and American tastes don’t always line up, this could spark a boost in interest for Microsoft’s fledgling system here in the States. If Microsoft’s claims about the OS–that WP7 requires 20 percent fewer steps to accomplish tasks than Android or iPhone–are true, the company may have a success on their hands.

Skype Blocks Nimbuzz, Clarifies Mobile Phone Rules

Mobile messaging provider Nimbuzz said Monday that it has been asked by Skype to remove all of its Skype support, making Nimbuzz the second third-party mobile client, after Fring, to get the hammer from Skype.

"Skype's decision is unfair to its own and our users," Evert Jaap Lugt, chief executive of Nimbuzz said in a statement.

Skype, for its part, said it's keeping tighter rein over china phone clients than over desktop software. "Our APIs and SDK are designed for third-party hardware and desktop software application development," Skype said in a statement.

Skype seems to be protecting the company's relationships with specific mobile operators. "We only work with mobile operators and handset manufacturers committed to delivering the best Skype user experience, as we've shown with 3, Nokia, Verizon and, most recently, KDDI," Skype's statement said.

Nimbuzz has another theory, one that Skype didn't support in its own statement. "The move is understood to be in line with Skype's mandate to disconnect with all third-party VoIP services ahead of its impending IPO," Nimbuzz claims.

Skype's relationship with Verizon here in the U.S. initially kept the Skype BlackBerry and Android clients from being available on any other carrier, although Skype is also available for the hiPhone on AT&T. Recently Skype released a Wi-Fi-only version of its Android software for non-Verizon users.

On Skype's part, the company said it offered to discuss the issue with Nimbuzz but haven't heard back from the other company since August.

There's no widely accepted standard for VoIP and video chat over china mobile phones. While there are many clients for the open SIP standard, the proprietary Skype, Fring, Nimbuzz, Apple FaceTime and Line2 systems all have their adherents. Frank Ahearn is a privacy expert who, for the last nine years, has consulted clients on how to go into hiding.

Victims of violent crime or abusive partners seek out Ahearn for help. Women looking to escape arranged marriages, a still-prevalent phenomenon in some cultures, also have provided a steady flow of clients, he said.

Ahearn generally provides stalker victims with free advice. He calls it "Ahearn's witness protection program." But skittish business travelers can pay between $12,000 and $25,000 for Ahearn's services.

Ninety-nine percent of the 500 to 1,000 people who visit his website every day get there by typing into Google or another search engine: "how to disappear."

With the rise of china mobile phones and smartphones, Ahearn has learned that you don't need to go off the grid in order to hide out.

"The cell phone has been a godsend," he said on the phone from New York recently. "You can use it to your advantage."

Ahearn offers some tips to help conceal yourself.

For one, use a prepaid cell phone. These are more difficult to track, Ahearn said. And they can usually be bought with cash or a prepaid credit card, eliminating a paper trail.

Many cell phones and most smartphones include a GPS chip that can be tapped into by the cell carrier or shrewd hacker for location-tracking purposes. Some china phone sold overseas don't include that chip, Ahearn said. There are shops in the U.S. that will remove GPS chips from a phone, he added.

Smartphones can also geotag pictures taken on the device with precise coordinates. That, too, could hinder someone's hiding plans if left unchecked.

Ahearn knows. He started his career as a skip tracer, locating people for a bounty.

Many of the stunts he used, such as persuading telecom companies to let him access phone records, are now illegal. But scouring social-network profiles -- Facebook, Twitter and, perhaps the granddaddy of all finders' tools, Foursquare -- is legit.

"Technology is like a double-edged sword," Ahearn wrote. "You can use china hiphone to find information on people, from their social-networking accounts to reverse directories to miscellaneous database searches online."

But social networks can also be used to the hider's advantage.

Microsoft Confirms Oct. 11 Launch of Windows Phone 7

Microsoft will launch its latest mobile phone operating system, Windows Phone 7, in New York on October 11, according to a posting on its website.

The event invitation says the operating system will be unveiled next Monday at 3pm in the New York City Microsoft Technology Center.

Windows Phone 7 is an attempt by Microsoft to regain ground in the mobile phone sector. Apple's iPhone, Research In Motion's BlackBerry and Google's Android have all taken market share from Microsoft mobile OSs over the past few years.

China mobile phone helps police find suspect

State police were tipped off by yoga enthusiasts that Joel Snider might have been involved in New Berlin yoga teacher Sudharman's slaying, but they tracked their suspect largely on the location of his china phone calls.

Police first determined that Snider had used his cell phone on Route 147 between Northumberland and Milton at 8:51 a.m. July 5 — hours before Sudharman's bullet-riddled body was found by a teacher at the New Berlin yoga center.

After they learned that Snider was in the Baltimore area, two troopers — Wayne Ghrist and James A Hansel II — were immediately dispatched to Maryland to work with law enforcement there to try to apprehend the suspect.

Police were first told that Snider was staying at a hotel in Prince George's County, Md., but when troopers arrived, they found he had fled.

The state troopers worked with their counterparts from Prince George's County and Baltimore while communicating with Pennsylvania state police technical specialists in Harrisburg, said Hansel, the lead investigator in the case.

Officers followed Snider by electronically tracking his movements, based on where he used his china mobile phone, Hansel said. They were able to pinpoint his location to a hotel in Glenn Marsh, Md. A command post was set up in the parking lot of a nearby mall and the other occupants of the hotel were evacuated for their safety.

A SWAT team from Baltimore was summoned to storm Snider's room if needed, but when police went to his room, he surrendered peacefully.

Hansel said the quick arrest was made possible by cooperation and coordination between the state police and law enforcement officials in Maryland.

After Snider was arrested, police searched his hotel room, but Hansel would not say if police found a weapon that could have been used in Sudharman's murder or what else was obtained in that search.

"We got a lot of good evidence," he said.

"We had probable cause to make an arrest," Hansel said. "But since the arrest, our investigation has taken leaps and bounds. Everything is coming together well."

Hansel said that Union County District Attorney Pete Johnson has filed paperwork with Gov. Ed Rendell's office to request the extradition of Snider from Maryland to face charges in Sudharman's killing. A spokesman in Gov. Ed Rendell's office said an extradition hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 19 in Maryland.

China Phone Manufacturer Continues Overseas Expansion

China mobile phone manufacturer, ChinaTelcom has continued its overseas expansion after launching its products in Bangladesh. The company has entered into a distribution arrangement with Reach Distribution which is expected to put the phones into some 2,500 retail outlets.

The company will initially offer twelve models for sale in the country with a price range between 2,000 and 16,000 taka (US$28.13 - $225).

It aims to target consumers of all segments, with special focus on the youth and the growing rural markets of Bangladesh, the company said in a statement.

"We have been keenly observing the Bangladesh telecom market for the tremendous growth it has undertaken over the last few years. We are sure that the country is on path for a digital connectivity and has a great future for telecommunication industry as a whole and wireless communication in particular," Vikas Jain, business director of ChinaTelcom Informatics said.

Hidden Formulas Send Mixed Signals on Mobile Phones

More bars in more places? As Apple Inc.'s blunder with its iPhone signal-strength display revealed, the number of bars on a phone has more to do with the whims of handset manufacturers than it does with hard calculations about network coverage.

There is no standard industry definition of what the number of signal bars shown on a china mobile phone should represent. Consumers who switch from one model or brand to another might find that the maximum number of bars has changed from four to five, and that seeing a maximum signal means something totally different on the new handset. Many wireless companies and phone manufacturers won't reveal the math they use to convert signal strength to bars, calling the information proprietary. And last week, after some consumers noticed that holding the iPhone a certain way made the number of signal bars decline, Apple disclosed that the formula it has been using was "totally wrong," causing the display to overstate cell signal strength.

"It's just a rough graphical presentation," Branimir Vojcic, professor of engineering and applied science at George Washington University, says of signal bars.

In theory, the bars represent the power of a china phone's connection to its wireless network. Only a tiny amount of power is needed to complete a call or download data, yet most phones will get reception over a wide range of signal strength. A strong signal, obtained for example when a caller is standing near a cell tower, could be about 10 billionths of a watt, according to wireless engineers. (Thus it would take 10 billion such connections to power a 100-watt light bulb.) At the other end of the spectrum, a signal of 10 quadrillionths, or 0.00000000000001, of a watt (a quadrillion is a million billion) could be enough to complete a call. So a phone could still work when it shows one bar, even though it has one-millionth—and not one-fifth—the signal strength of that same phone when it shows five bars.

That one bar of signal strength might suffice, but it could lead to dropped calls, poor data transfers and other cellphone headaches. Cellphone users' ability to interpret the signal bars has been hampered by companies' varying definitions and a lack of full transparency about what the bars mean.

Apple hasn't disclosed details of the calculations it used or the new formula it plans to adopt based on the recommendations of its U.S. network provider AT&T Mobility, the wireless unit of AT&T. (An AT&T spokesman referred questions to Apple, and an Apple spokeswoman didn't respond to a request for comment.) Several tech enthusiasts, though, have tested their iPhones and reported that the company was showing four bars out of a maximum of five even with relatively weak signals. For instance, tech Web site AnandTech reported that signal strength as low as 80 quadrillionths of a watt corresponded to four bars. IPhoneRoot.com, an independent website for all things iPhone, ran separate tests and concluded that four bars could correspond to signal strength as low as 13 quadrillionths of a watt.

The Google Android, by contrast, shows three bars out of four only when signal strength is above 200 quadrillionths of a watt. That is roughly 2.5 to 16 times stronger than the threshold for iPhone to show four bars out of five.

Comparing the HiPhone's formula with other devices is difficult because most manufacturers don't share their calculations either. The Android's software is available on the Internet, but representatives for Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., Research in Motion Inc. and Nokia Corp. all declined to disclose the formula their handsets use or didn't respond to requests for the information. Representatives for the four major U.S. carriers—AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel Corp. and Deutsche Telekom AG's T-Mobile USA—also declined to share formulas, with some saying it was left up to the handset makers.

"This was an extreme example," Simon Saunders, director of technology for Real Wireless Limited, a consultancy in Pulborough, U.K., says of Apple's misleading signal bars. He says he understands why a cellphone maker would show the maximum number of bars for all but the weakest signals. "For the majority of that range, everything sounds the same to you," Dr. Saunders says. The problem with that approach is that the consumer wouldn't know that a call is at risk of being dropped, something that is more likely with weaker reception.

Even the raw signal-strength number doesn't tell wireless users everything they need to know about reception. Other factors—such as interference with other cell towers, the type of wireless network and how many others are using the network—also are important. "The reasons calls get dropped are much more varied than simple signal strength," says Spencer Webb, president of AntennaSys Inc., an antenna-design company in Pelham, N.H. "We have done nothing to make this whole thing more quantitative."

Representatives for the Federal Communications Commission and CTIA, the wireless-industry trade group, say they have no rules or standards for signal bars. How to avoid cell phone 'bill shock' this summer

Anyone going to the World Cup or abroad can minimise the cost of mobile calls, text messages and internet fees.

As if the thousands of UK travellers trapped abroad after the recent volcanic ash drama hadn't suffered enough damage to their bank balances, many are now facing mobile phone "bill shock".

These holidaymakers, many of whom are just receiving their latest mobile phone bills, may be dismayed when they discover how much they have spent on calls and data roaming while stranded abroad. The Observer recently ran a story about William Harrison, a student who accidentally ran up an £8,000 phone bill with Orange while in France by using his mobile to access the internet.

In theory, mobile bills should no longer be too painful for those travelling to Europe, as from 1 March all European mobile operators have been obliged under EU roaming rules to offer their customers a cut-off limit of €50 (about £45) for using the internet on their china phones. However, it is still early days and not yet clear whether all operators are complying with this rule.

In a month's time the regulations will tighten further, as at the moment customers need to opt-in to this limit, whereas from 1 July the cut-off limit will be set at €50 by default unless they opt out.

For those travelling further afield the cost of calling, texting and using the internet on their mobile can still be an expensive pastime. Independent consumer body Consumer Focus warned World Cup ticket holders last week that costs for calls, texts and data use could add up to more than £100 on a match day – more than the face value of a ticket.

Mobile phone operators are expected to start bringing out more competitive china phone packages in the next few weeks as the holiday season hots up.

But for now, anyone who is about to go abroad has a number of options: doing nothing and sticking with their operator's standard overseas charges (expensive); switching to their operator's overseas calls package (cheaper); buying a global or local sim (potentially even cheaper, depending on usage).

Mike Wilson, mobiles and broadband manager at moneysupermarket.com, says: "Don't underestimate how easy it is to rack up a hefty mobile bill if you are going overseas and planning to use your hiphone.

"Before escaping the country be sure to check with your operator how much calls, texts and internet use will set you back when you're away, because you won't be charged the same rates as your UK tariff. I would advise asking if there is a cheaper international tariff available."

Paying as standard

For standard call charges in Europe, T-Mobile and Virgin are the most expensive at 43p a minute, according to moneysupermarket.com, while 02 is the cheapest at 35p a minute. Network operator 3 is the cheapest for receiving calls at 15p a minute compared to Orange, T-Mobile and Virgin, which all charge the most at 19p. Sending texts is 11p a message with all networks, and all are free to receive.

The cost of using the internet is where operators' charges vary hugely, and where holidaymakers are most likely to run up large bills. T-Mobile, 3, 02 and Orange all charge a flat fee per megabyte (MB) of between £1.25 (3) and £3 (02 and Orange), while Vodafone and Virgin offer the option of either paying per MB, or paying either a daily or hourly fee for web usage (with a cap on how much data can be used).

Virgin, for example, charges £5 a MB, or £4 for a one-hour pass with a 3MB limit and £6 for a 24-hour pass with a 5MB limit.

Whichever package you have you need to be careful about how much data you download. One MB is not much – watching a two-hour film uses about 800 MB.

All these charges when incurred within Europe are considerably lower than in some other countries. For example, if you visit Egypt with your Orange phone you will pay £1.75 a minute to call home and £8 per MB of data used, while in Australia you will pay £1.20 a minute per call and £7.50 per MB of data with T-Mobile.

Package things up

To keep costs down, a good alternative is to opt for your operator's travel package. Vodafone's Passport deal, for example, means you pay your standard home rate to call the UK from more than 35 European countries (and from Australia and New Zealand) after paying a 75p connection charge. These calls can be part of your inclusive minutes if you are on a contract. To receive calls you pay the 75p connection charge and you can talk for up to 60 minutes free of charge. After that you pay 20p a minute.

02's My Europe Extra, on the other hand, is £10 a month for 25p-a-minute calls, free received calls and 11p texts.

Go global – or local

You can avoid your UK operator's charges altogether by switching your network sim card for a global or local sim using websites such as 0044.co.uk and UK2Abroad.co.uk. A global sim card will work across a number of countries so is particularly good for frequent travellers or backpackers, while a local sim will only work in one country. You can buy these before you travel, but you might need to get your phone unlocked by your operator so you can switch cards.

Most global and local sims cost somewhere between £15 and £30 and come loaded with differing amounts of call credit, which you can top up by credit or debit card at any time. For those travelling to South Africa for the World Cup, for example, 0044's South African local sim costs £29.99 and gives you ZAR 55 (about £5) of credit.

After that, local calls cost 10p a minute off-peak, calls to the UK are 63p a minute, while texts to the UK are 15p. This compares with the standard pay-as-you-go rates on Orange where charges for local calls within South Africa and to the UK are £1.45 a minute and texts are 50p a message.

Buying a local or global sim will mean you temporarily have a new phone number, so you will need to make sure people know this before you go.

Surging Smartphone Sales Boost Mobile-Phone Market

Global mobile-phone shipments rose 17 percent year over year to 314.7 million units in the first quarter, buoyed by robust smartphone sales, according to Gartner analysts. Smartphone sales to end users soared 48.7 percent to 54.3 million units -- the strongest year-on-year increase since 2006.

Smartphones accounted for 17.3 percent of all mobile handset sales in the first quarter -- up from 13.6 percent in the same period last year. Apple's iPhones, Research In Motion's BlackBerry handsets, and smartphones based on Google's Android OS all proved to be big winners in the first three months of the year.

"The first quarter was Apple's strongest quarter yet, which placed the company in the No. 7 position with a 112.2 percent increase in mobile-device sales," noted Gartner Research Vice President Carolina Milanesi.

Android's U.S. Surge

During the first quarter, Android displaced Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform in the number-four global smartphone slot for the first time, Milanesi noted. Moreover, Android was the biggest winner in the U.S. market, where it displaced Apple's iPhone OS as the number-two smartphone platform by growing its market share by nearly 22 percentage points year over year to 26.6 percent.

"Android's momentum continued into the first quarter of 2010, particularly in North America, where sales of Android-based phones increased 707 percent year on year," Milanesi said.

BlackBerry sales reached 10.6 million units in the quarter -- a 45.9 percent year-on-year increase. "This quarter saw RIM, a pure smartphone player, make its debut in the top five mobile-device manufacturers, and saw Apple increase its market share by 1.2 percentage points," Milanesi said.

RIM's focus on its ecosystem strategy -- together with its tightly integrated control of store, OS and device -- played to RIM's strengths on a global basis during the first quarter, Milanesi noted. In the United States, however, RIM saw its share of the smartphone market decline 14 percent year over year, even as Apple's share rose four percentage points to 22.1 percent.

Industry observers note that RIM still needs to embrace touch capabilities in a big way to regain U.S. momentum. "In the consumer space, touch and a strong ecosystem are starting to become more and more important," Milanesi noted. RIM also needs "to improve its web-browsing experience," she added.

Nokia's Sliding Market Share

The Symbian OS long championed by Nokia remained the world's number-one smartphone OS during the quarter, but Symbian's share of the market was down 4.5 percentage points from a year earlier, Milanesi noted. Though Nokia remains weak in its high-end portfolio, Milanesi said the situation should improve with Nokia's release of the N8 and other devices in the fourth quarter.

"There are also devices such as the C5 and E5 that will help drive smartphones sales, but still in the mid-tier market," Milanesi said. "In the high end we will wait for Meego and then Symbian 4 next year."

Research firm iSuppli expects smartphone shipments to grow 35.5 percent this year, compared to 11.3 percent for the global mobile business overall. "Because of this, companies that are exclusively focused on this area, like RIM and Apple, have managed to move up to near the top tier of the china mobile phone business," said iSuppli Senior Analyst Tina Teng. "This shows that the smartphone is reshaping the competitive landscape of the wireless business."

Teng also noted that RIM is now poised to displace Sony Ericsson as the third-largest player in the global mobile-phone market. "It will be interesting to see how much more market share RIM and Apple can gain in 2010," Teng said.

Ever since Apple unleashed the iPod and then the hiPhone on the world, spotting the words "Microsoft" and "cool" in the same sentence has been an extremely rare occasion.

But I feel I must do so right now.

The software giant last week began selling the KIN 1 and KIN 2 china cell phones through Verizon Wireless. These (here it comes) Microsoft phones are really cool, both in design and concept.

The KINs aren't smartphones. They're social media phones, with software out of the box that gives its full attention to Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and their ilk.

Plug in all the proper info for your accounts, and tiles of photos of your friends with their corresponding status updates and tweets will appear on the home screen. If you subscribe to any RSS feeds, news updates from those will show up, too. They call it the KIN Loop, as in keeping you in the loop.

Scroll to the right, and you create a photo-tiled wall of your favorite contacts for easy access to their e-mail addresses, social media accounts and phone numbers.

Scroll to the left, and you'll see a tile of icons for access to the Web, camera, text messages, e-mail accounts and more.

The result probably is unlike anything you've seen before. And that takes some adjustment.

Yet, in many ways, the odd-looking operating system on the KIN 1 and KIN 2 is a lot like the one on Microsoft's Zune HD digital music player. The tiles look the same. There's also a Zune app on each KIN.

The KIN phones also serve as a preview of things to come with Windows Phone 7.

Photos, videos, texts and your contacts all will stay there even if you erase the phone. So don't hand out your password.

The KIN 2 also has an 8 megapixel camera and shoots high-def video.

Both phones are for sale at www.verizonwireless.com, and on Thursday, they hit stores. The KIN 1 is $49.99 and the KIN 2 is $99.99, both after a $100 mail-in rebate and a two-year contract.

Many banks are now offering mobile and text banking. That means you can transfer funds, receive text alerts about your account, pay your bills, and correspond with your bank from anywhere at any time.

Chief Information Officer for STAR Financial Bank, Ralph Marcuccilli, says STAR plans to begin offering mobile banking this summer and continue to make upgrades and offer additional services as time goes on.

"It's like with text messaging. The volume of text messages exceeds the number of telephone calls, and just like that has caught on, this is another convenient way for the customer to communicate with their bank and get their banking information."

STAR isn't the first bank to offer these types of services, and Marcuccilli says that's for a reason. He says they wanted to be sure that they could provide mobile banking technology to customers without the fear of compromising security.

He says he is confident his customers don't have to worry about the security of their accounts. "There's not any information that somebody could use on the china cell phone. If you just got a balance for a customer, there's not really any account information that could identify the person."

Darren Lichtsinn is a District Sales Manager for Sprint Nextel. He says there are ways cell phone users can protect themselves when dealing with personal information.

Lichtsinn says many china mobile phones are capable of sending a text message to a missing phone that will automatically delete all of the information from a device. He also suggests calling your china phone provider immediately if you lose your phone or suspect it has been stolen. He says the provider will be able to disable the device.

"Obviously with some of this technology they are sending text messages with balance information, other stuff like that, to your device. So, wiping the device would eliminate all of that off of there and also calling the carrier insures that they won't be able to access anything that you've accessed in the past."

Lichtsinn agrees with Marcuccilli about the safety of mobile banking. "If you're taking the right steps as a consumer - wiping your device and calling your carrier, than it's going to be virtually impossible for them to get any information off of it."

He also says the best ways to protect yourself are to prevent others from having access to your phone and to erase any texts that you wouldn't want other people to have access to.

China mobile phone seized from Nalini's cell

A china mobile phone was seized on Tuesday from the cell in which Rajiv Gandhi's assassin Nalini Sriharan is lodged in Vellore prison in Chennai, jail officials said.

The search and seizure operation was conducted in the morning in the Vellore women's prison.

"During a routine check by Vellore Prison Superintendent Rajalakshmi and her team a china phone was found and seized. Further investigation is on," K.R. Shyamsundar, assistant director general of police and inspector general of prisons, told IANS.

Vellore women's prison authorities are tight-lipped on the issue.

The latest development could be a setback for Nalini, who has approached the Madras High Court against the Tamil Nadu government's decision to reject her appeal for release before her life term ends.

The state government based its decision to reject Nalini's appeal on the findings of the Prison Advisory Board headed by the Vellore district collector.

The board had listed eight counts not to free Nalini, including her reported refusal to apologise for Gandhi's murder in 1991.

A woman suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) detonated explosives strapped to herself while pretending to touch Gandhi's feet at a rally in Sriperambudoor on May 21, 1991.

Nalini was part of the team of conspirators that killed Gandhi for sending the Indian Army to Sri Lanka in 1987.

Originally, Nalini was convicted on 16 counts of murder and given death penalty.

On the intervention of Sonia Gandhi, the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.

In September last year, Nalini filed a petition that she was entitled for release in 2005 itself as she had completed 14 years in jail.

After her arrest, Nalini had married LTTE activist known by his nom de guerre Murugan. He is also in prison for Gandhi's murder. Their daughter, who was born when Nalini was in prison, is grown up.

In March last year, Priyanka Vadra, daughter of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi, visited Nalini in the prison. Nalini also cited that meeting while asking for her release.

Microsoft said its new touch-screen phones — a short, square-shaped handset called Kin 1 and a longer, more rectangular one called Kin 2 — will be sold exclusively in the U.S. by Verizon Wireless. They are being made by Sharp Corp., which has produced Sidekick cellphones, whose software comes from Microsoft-owned Danger Inc.

In the past, Microsoft has mostly sold its mobile software to other companies to put it on phones they make. This will be the case with its recently announced Windows Phone 7 Series software, which is expected to be on handsets by the holidays. The Kin phones mark a departure, as Microsoft has sway over the creation of their software and hardware.

Verizon said it will start selling the Kin phones online in early May and in stores shortly thereafter. In the fall, carrier Vodafone Group PLC — which owns Verizon Wireless in partnership with Verizon Communications Inc. — will start selling the Kin phones in Italy, Spain, Germany and the U.K. Microsoft has not yet announced prices.

Microsoft needs help in the cellphone market. Its software has been losing share while Apple Inc. and Google Inc., which makes the Android operating software, have gained. Microsoft software ran on 13.1 per cent of smart phones sold in the U.S. last year, according to research firm In-Stat. That put Microsoft in third place after BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. and Apple.

Roz Ho, leader of the Microsoft team behind the Kin, said the company has been working on the Kin devices for several years, trying to create a handset for people who especially want to connect with others over social Web sites such as Facebook. The phones are also meant for people who want a handset that works simply, without forcing them to hunt through menus and icons, she said.

That setup could also present a risk. Unlike most popular smart phones, the Kins won't have access to application stores that let customers download add-on software programs. Ho said her team studied consumer habits and then built the activities they used most often into the Kin phones.

For instance, in a demo for The Associated Press, the Kin's home screen showed a live stream of updates to social networks and Web sites that can be clicked on and responded to. Users can send photos and other material to people dragging it onto a little circle at the bottom of the screen. A finger swipe across the screen can then bring up a page with applications such as photos and music.

The music player will be based on Microsoft's Zune software, which until now has been only a standalone media player.

Microsoft and Verizon said they don't think consumers will get confused.

John Starkweather, who runs the digital marketing team behind the Kin, said the handsets will not be obviously branded as Microsoft products. They will sport a sizable “Kin” logo on the back and, in smaller type, an indication that they are Windows phones from Verizon and Sharp, he said.

Both Kin phones are black with screens that respond to multiple finger gestures, similar to the “multitouch” technology on the iPhone. The shorter Kin 1 has a full QWERTY keyboard that slides out from the bottom, while the Kin 2 has a full QWERTY keyboard that comes out from its side.

Both include Wi-Fi access and cameras capable of taking higher-resolution photos than most handsets: The Kin 1 will include a 5-megapixel camera, while the Kin 2 will have a 8-megapixel camera. The Kin 2 will also be capable of shooting HD-quality video.

Neither has a memory card slot; instead, the phones will upload content such as photos and videos to a Kin online storage service to free up memory.

Microsoft already does something similar with the Sidekick phones — it stores phone numbers, photos and other personal data on servers it runs. This resulted in an embarrassing incident late last year, when a server meltdown caused data to disappear from some users' phones. T-Mobile temporarily stopped selling the phones, and some customers even sued.

Microsoft managed to restore most of the missing data, and gave $100 gift cards to affected customers.

India prepares for 3G phone licence scramble

Mobile phone companies, including Vodafone, are bracing themselves for a frantic round of bidding for new 3G licences in India.

The auction is expected to raise billions of dollars for the Indian Government and echoes the race for 3G licences in the Britain at the turn of the century which netted the Government £22.5 billion.

While India's 3G auction will not match the amount raised in the UK, analysts expect the initial forecast of $8 billion (£5.2 billion) to be beaten.

A total of 71 3G licences are being auctioned off over the coming days in India’s 22 regions — known as ‘circles’ — which will be followed by a separate auction of the broadband spectrum. Six operators will compete for the licences, with Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Vodafone Essar — the three largest operators in the country — set to dominate the bidding

India has 600 million china phone subscribers and adds 20 million new users added every month. Vodafone Essar said yesterday it now has more than 100 million customers and that 60 per cent of its new users come from rural areas.

However, India is also one of the most competitive markets in the world, with cheap prices and per-second billing. Mobile operators will be wary of overpaying for 3G licences, as happened in the UK in 2000, given the price competition.

Société Générale said that the 3G licences could end up costing the winners up to $2 billion while the broadband license could cost up to $1 billion. With a number of auctions of spectrum — the radio frequencies used to carry china mobile phone signals — on the horizon in Europe, the bank said that the cost of spectrum is becoming much more visible to investors.

Germany is set to hold a spectrum auction over the coming months yet an auction in the UK of frequencies freed up by the switchover to digital TV has been delayed by the election.

Buying a new China cell phone? How to make sure it's right for YOU

As a lover of all things tech and a china cell phone junkie, I get asked this question all the time. Which phone should I buy? Friends, family and sometimes complete strangers seem to think us geeks have the magic answer, the end all, be all phone for each and every individual! Truth is, there isn't one. Today, I'll attempt to guide you in the right direction based on my experiences with cell phones.

Assess your needs

This is the first and most important thing you need to do. Don't get more phone than you need and/or want. If you won't be surfing the Web, posting to facebook or downloading enough apps to cover 10 pages on the screen then an iPhone is a waste of money. In fact, it'll most likely frustrate you more than anything. Simple tasks aren't always simple on advanced smartphones. You get more functionality but along with that comes a few extra levels of complexity. If you just plan on sending text messages and making phone calls, stick with a "dumbphone." Don't be insulted by that, it is what it is. There are plenty of these simple/dumb phones that also offer full qwerty keyboards and a few advanced features without getting too confusing. Sometimes the old adage, "keep it simple stupid" is the best route.

To QWERTY or not to QWERTY

If you're an avid texter, a full keyboard (aka QWERTY keyboard) is the way to go. Once you figure out if a keyboard would be helpful you have to decide if you want a touchscreen keyboard (iPhone, Google Nexus One, HTC Hero, etc) or a hardware keyboard (Moto Droid, Palm Pre/Pixi, Blackberry, etc). This decision will easily slice almost 50 percent of the smartphones off your list. Spend some time with these china phones before you make this decision. Some people love the touchscreen keyboards and others can't handle them. Also remember, typing in the controlled confines of a cell phone store is one thing, typing while sitting in the back seat of a car is entirely different. Borrow a friend's phone and try it in a real-life scenario.

What functions are important to you?

Blackberries are by far the most popular smartphone on the market. iPhones get all the hype, and DO sell really well, but RIM has the largest market share. They are great with e-mail, text messaging, keeping a calendar and other basic tasks. They're not so great when it comes to surfing the Web. The Blackberry Web browser is very weak compared to other smartphones (although that should soon change with an expected update). More apps are coming out for the Blackberry every day but they're not as fun and easy to use as the apps for other smartphones. If the Web, fun apps and games are your thing I would steer clear of the Blackberry and opt for an iPhone, Palm Pre/Pixi or an Android phone. If you're more worried about hammering out e-mails and keeping tabs on your work calender but don't expect to be surfing the Web too much, a Blackberry may be a better option.

Bottom line, kick the tires!

I can't say this enough, spend some time with it! You really won't know if a phone is right for you until you spend a good amount of time navigating the OS and trying out the functions you are interested in. Find a friend, borrow their phone for a few hours and go to town. You'll also be able to explore coverage issues. Sometimes the carrier you think is best for you has 1 bar in your living room! I can tell you from experience, you don't want that! Also, just because a china phone looks cool in the store, has a flashy commercial or is perfect for your friend doesn't mean it's the right phone for you. Take your time! You may be stuck with this decision for the next 2 years.

I hope that helps! Mobile phones have become such a huge part of our lives that selecting one is a personal decision. Remember, it's one of the few things you will use multiple times a day, almost every day.

P.S. I've been using a china cell phone since June and am really happy with it. For me, it's a perfect mix of messaging functions, a great Internet browser and fun apps/games. As LeVar Burton would say, "you don't have to take my word for it."

China Mobile phone users increase to over 756 million in January 2010, says MIIT

There were 756.6 million subscribers of mobile communication services in China as of the end of January 2010, growing by 1.23% on month and by 16.45% on year, according to statistics from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The number of subscribers accounted for 56.3% of the country's population (user density).

In January, mobile phone subscribers in China sent 66.53 billion short messages, averaging 2.85 short messages per phone number a day, the MIIT figures show.

As of the end of January there were 311.76 million subscribers of fixed telecommunication networks in China, translating into a user density of 23.6%, according to MIIT.
